Phil Steele Preseason All-PFL
SAN DIEGO, CA - Six Toreros have been named to Phil Steele's 2011 Preseason All-Pioneer Football League Team. Three Toreros, led by senior defensive end Mario Kurn
(Encinitas, CA; Santa Fe Christian HS) who was named to Phil Steele's Preseason FCS All-America 2nd Team Defense, were named to the First Team. Kurn, who led the FCS in quarterback sacks in 2010 with 17, was joined on the First Team Defense by senior defensive back Al-Rilwan Adeyemi
(Santa Monica, CA). Senior Christian Fetters
(Fresno, CA), who anchors the Torero offensive line at center, was named to the First Team Offense.
A trio of Toreros were named to the Second Team - senior safety Loka Kanongataa (Bellevue, WA) for defense; junior quarterback Mason Mills (Coronado, CA; Coronado HS) on offense; and sophomore return specialist Sam Hoekstra (Carlsbad, CA; Santa Fe Christian HS) to special teams.
Adeyemi has also been tabbed a nominee for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced a record 132 nominees for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. The award recognizes the selfless contributions to volunteerism and community service made by college football student-athletes across the country. Two 11-player Good Works Teams - one comprising of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The 22 student-athletes named to the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team will be announced in late September.
USD football players report to camp August 9th with their first practice slated for August 10th. USD's season opener is September 3rd at Azusa Pacific (6pm), followed by their home opener on September 10th against Western New Mexico (6pm).
