USD Football Report To Camp August 4th
Aug. 1, 2017

TOREROS REPORT TO CAMP AUGUST 4TH: The USD Torero football team, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Dale Lindsey, will report to camp on Friday, August 4th. Coach Lindsey and his staff are expecting 110 student-athletes to report with the first practice slated for Saturday, August 5th, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Manchester Field (see complete camp schedule below). Practices are open to the media and interviews are available post-practice.  Please contact the USD athletic communications office in advance to coordinate post-practice interviews.

TORERO TIDBITS: For the seventh straight year the Toreros were picked to finish first in the PFL Preseason Coaches’ Poll. USD received nine of a possible 10 first-place votes and 99 of a maximum 100 points to edge out Dayton (2 first-place votes, 8 second-place votes, 92 points).  They were followed by Marist (69), Drake (67), Campbell & Jacksonville (62), Butler (49), Morehead State (42), Stetson (29), Valparaiso (24) and Davidson (10).  The upcoming 2017 season marks the 25th year for the Pioneer Football League – the nation’s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. The league will feature 11 teams each playing an eight-game schedule to determine the league champion and recipient of the automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA FCS Championship. Last season USD finished 10-2 overall, 8-0 in PFL play and ranked 19th in the final STATS FCS Top-25 poll. Seven Toreros were named to the 2017 All-PFL Preseason squad.  Senior defensive end Jonathan Petersen (Poway, Calif.) and senior offensive tackle Miles McArdle (Napa, Calif.) were selected for the second consecutive year.  Joining them on this year's preseason team are redshirt junior QB Anthony Lawrence (La Mesa, California), senior TE Ross Dwelley (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), senior offensive center Joe Hurney (Charlotte, North Carolina), redshirt junior offensive tackle Daniel Cooney (Western Springs, Illinois) and senior safety Ray Clark (Brentwood, California).  Cooney (2nd Team) and Petersen (3rd Team) were recently named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Teams.  The Toreros return 12 starters (players with 7 or more starts) from last year's team - eight on offense, four on defense, and 43 returners (not including 2016 redshirts).

2017 SCHEDULE: The Toreros will kick-off the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 2nd with a 2:00 p.m. home contest against Western New Mexico. The opener will be followed by road trips to UC Davis (Sept. 9) and Princeton (Sept. 16).  PFL play begins on Sept. 23 with a home contest against Butler.  The remaining home slate includes Morehead State (Oct. 14), Drake (Nov. 4) and Marist (Nov. 18).  All five of USD’s home games will kick-off at 2:00 p.m. this season.  USD’s road schedule in PFL play includes games at Dayton (Sept. 30), Jacksonville (Oct. 21), Stetson (Oct. 28) and Davidson (Nov. 11).
