Toreros Find Points Hard to Come By in Loss at UC Davis
DAVIS, Calif.- The University of San Diego football team fell to UC Davis by a score of 31-3 Saturday night from Aggie Stadium. The Toreros (2-1) were unable to capitalize on offensive opportunities throughout the contest, while UC Davis (1-2) earned their first win of the season with the victory.

GAME #2: The USD Toreros (1-0), under the direction of fifth year head coach Dale Lindsey, head to Davis, California this weekend to take on the UC Davis Aggies (0-1) on Saturday, September 9th. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at Aggie Stadium (capacity: 10,849). The game will air on the radio on ESPN 1700 AM with Jack Cronin calling the action.

FOOTBALL TICKETS: USD offers some outstanding packages for its Torero fans for the five regular season games. All season tickets are located on the south side of the stadium- sections 112-123. An individual season ticket costs $60.00. A USD Faculty/Staff season ticket costs $40.00. USD is excited to offer a new promotion for its recent Torero Graduates (within last 5 years), a season ticket for $40.00. A Family Four Pack (includes two adult and two children season tickets) can be purchased for $180.00. Season tickets can be purchased online, by phone or in-person. USD Faculty/Staff, Recent Graduate and Family Four Pack may only be purchased through the box office, either by phone 619-260-7550 or in-person. Single game ticket prices for football include the following: reserved seating ($15), general admission ($10 adult, $5 high school student or under). USD faculty and staff receive up to four free general admission tickets (available upon request). The Toreros provide an excellent Family Four Pack for $48; this comes with four general admission tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas and one popcorn. Group tickets for general admission only seats are $7 (10 to 19 people), and $5 for groups of 20 or more. Additionally, all military personnel (with proper ID) can receive a complimentary ticket for all Torero home football games.

SERIES RECORD: This is the sixth meeting between USD and UC Davis with the Aggies owning a 4-1 advantage. These two teams last met on September 17, 2011 in Davis with the Aggies winning 31-3. USD was paced by RB Kenn James (117 yards) and kicker Ernie Collins (41-yard FG). In 2010, UCD defeated the Toreros 38-24 at Torero Stadium. The Toreros snapped UCD's initial two-game win streak in the series with a 28-20 win at Torero Stadium on Nov. 21, 2008. The Aggies won the first two meetings in Davis by scores of 37-27 (2006) and 49-46 (2007).

A LOOK AHEAD: The Toreros continue their road swing with a game at Princeton on Saturday, September 16th (9:00 a.m. Pacific). It will be Princeton's season opener. 2017 PFL PRESEASON COACHES POLL: For the seventh straight year the Toreros were picked to finish first in the PFL Preseason Coaches Poll. The Toreros, who finished with a final national ranking of 19th in 2016, received nine first-place votes and a lone second-place vote to finish with 99 of the maximum 100 points possible. Dayton earned two first-place votes and eight second-place votes, finishing with 92 points. A group of four teams - separated by just seven points - were closely bunched behind the leading duo. Marist was picked to finish third with 69 points, followed by Drake in fourth place with 67 points. Campbell and Jacksonville were picked to finished tied for fifth with 62 points each. Behind the top six were Butler (49), Morehead State (42), Stetson (29), Valparaiso (24) and Davidson (10).

TORERO TIDBITS:
* USD Football is in its 55th season of play, and 25th season as a member of the Pioneer Football League... San Diego is second for most PFL titles with eight (Dayton leads with 12)... The Toreros have won five of the past six PFL championships (2016, 2015c, 2014, 2012c, 2011c) and eight overall when adding in titles from 2007c, 2006, 2005.

* Under head coach Dale Lindsey's watch, the Toreros are now 23-2 overall in home games at Torero Stadium, including a perfect 5-0 mark this past season. Coach Lindsey has yet to drop a home PFL contest in four seasons (16-0 record). Lindsey, a two-time PFL Coach of the Year and two-time FCS Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year candidate, is 37-10 overall (78.7 winning percentage).

* This past Saturday the Toreros defeated Western New Mexico 34-20, marking the seventh straight season USD has defeated the Mustangs to open the season at Torero Stadium. USD overcame a 13-0 deficit to pull away. Offensive leaders included QB Anthony Lawrence (15-28 for 187 yards, 2 TDs), WR Justin Priest (4 catches for 95 yards, 58 yard TD), RB Emilio Martinez (17 carries for 96 yards, 13 yard TD) and kicker Patrick Murray (32 & 34 yard field goals, 10 points). Defensively the Toreros forced four fumbles and collected eight tackles for loss. Corner David Tolbert and safety Ray Clark each collected 10 tackles. Junior LB Kim Mahoney totaled 8 stops with two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

* USD Football will host tailgates prior to each home game this season... With all five games kicking off at 2:00 p.m., the tailgates will begin at 12 noon up at the Vista Parking lot... This week will be a slider buffet and drinks for $20 per person and head coach Dale Lindsey will address the group at 12:45 pm. USD will also have two road tailgates at UC Davis and Princeton. * Torero players have selected senior right tackle Miles McArdle (Napa, Calif.) and senior defensive end Jonathan Peterson (Poway, Calif.) as its 2017 team captains.

* USD had a league-high seven players named to the preseason All-PFL team. Senior defensive end Jonathan Petersen (Poway, Calif.) and senior offensive tackle Miles McArdle (Napa, Calif.) were selected for the second consecutive year. Joining them on this year's preseason team are redshirt junior QB Anthony Lawrence (La Mesa, California), senior TE Ross Dwelley (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), senior offensive center Joe Hurney (Charlotte, North Carolina), redshirt junior offensive tackle Daniel Cooney (Western Springs, Illinois) and senior safety Ray Clark (Brentwood, California).

* The 2017 Toreros return 12 starters (7 or more starts) from last year's 10-2 squad that won the PFL Championship and earned the school's and league's first-ever postseason victory in the FCS Playoffs... The eight offensive players include Jake Arlotti (RG, 6-2, 285, RS-Sr.), Daniel Cooney (LT, 6-8, 315, RS-Jr.), Ross Dwelley (TE, 6-5, 240, Sr.), Joe Hurney (C, 6-1, 280, Sr.), Anthony Lawrence (QB, 6-1, 195, RS-Jr.), Miles McArdle (RT, 6-3, 283, Sr.), Justin Priest (WR, 6-2, 195, Sr.) and Trevor Provencio (LG, 6-1, 315, RS-Jr.). The four defensive players include Ray Clark (SAF, 5-11, 195, Sr.), Colton Giorgi (SAF, 6-1, 210, Sr.), Max Michaels (NB, 5-9, 195, Sr.) and Jonathan Peterson (DE, 6-1, 230, Sr.).

* Three Toreros have received prestigious preseason recognition... Junior QB Anthony Lawrence is on the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award Watch List that is given to the top FCS player at the end of the year... Junior left tackle Daniel Cooney was named to the STATS FCS All-America Second Team and senior DE Jonathan Petersen was named to the STATS FCS All-America Third Team.

* Over the past 12 seasons (2005-2016) the Toreros have combined for an overall record of 101-34 (74.8 winning percentage), and a PFL mark of 67-15 (81.7 winning percentage)... USD's overall home record on Walter J. Zable Field at Torero Stadium since the start of the 2005 campaign is 62-10 (86.1 winning percentage)... Including the last five home wins of the 2004 campaign, the Toreros strung together a school record 28 straight home victories (2004-2008).

* Key losses from last year's 10-2 club include six players that garnered All-PFL honors - Jamal Agnew, CB - All-PFL 1st Team * 5th Round Draft Pick by Detroit Lions * USD career leader with 59 passes defended; Devyn Bryant, CB - All-PFL 2nd Team * Led team with 16 passes defended * Ranked 8th on team with 31 tackles; Nic Henson, LB - All-PFL 1st Team * Ranked second on team with 65 tackles; Tevin Heyward, FB - All-PFL First Team; Jonah Hodges, RB - FCS All-America Second Team * PFL Offensive Player of the Year * 1,454 rushing yards, 18 rushing TDs * Playing in CFL with Montreal Alouettes; Brian Riley, WR - All-PFL First Team * Totaled 54 receptions for 986 yards and 7 touchdowns * Signed free agent contract with Indianapolis Colts.

* 40 Toreros were selected to the 2016 Pioneer Football Honor Roll, while six Toreros made it onto the 24th annual Academic All-PFL Squad - senior CB Devyn Bryant (San Diego, Calif., 3.54 GPA, Mechanical Engineering) and junior NB Max Michaels (Poway, Calif., 3.93 GPA, Accountancy) were named to the 1st team for the second consecutive year. They were joined on the first team by sophomore QB Anthony Lawrence (La Mesa, Calif., 3.59 GPA, Accountancy) and junior LB Alec Moreno (Poway, Calif., 3.67 GPA, Accountancy). Selected to the second team were junior WR Justin Priest (El Dorado Hills, Calif., 3.39 GPA, Finance) and sophomore DL Connor Spencer (Boulder, Colo., 3.68 GPA, Electrical Engineering).

* This week's opponent, UC Davis, opened up their 2017 campaign with a 38-17 road loss at San Diego State. First year head coach Dan Hawkins has 46 returning lettermen and thirteen starters (7 offense, 6 defense) back from last year's 3-8 team (2-6 Big Sky, t-10th). Against SDSU, sophomore QB Jake Maier completed 19-of-24 passses for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns. His favorite target was junior Keelan Doss (8 receptions for 181 yards, including a 32 yard TD). Junior RB Namane Modise carried the ball 10 times and finished with a team-high 44 yards. Sophmore punter Matt Blair averaged 42.0 yards on five punts with a long of 57. Defensively the Aggies were paced by redshirt freshman safety Erron Duncan (8 tackles), junior CB Vincent White (8 tackles) and two-way player Keelan Doss (25-yard interception return).
