USD is a perfect 3-0 on the season, and for the third time have been recognized by the PFL office with a player of the week. Following Saturday's 43-7 road win over Campbell, the Toreros had two players earn PFL weekly honors - sophomore running back Phil Morelli was named the offensive player of the week, and junior kicker James Cullen was tabbed the special teams player of the week. Morelli rushed 21 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns against the Camels, with all three TDs coming in the first half as the Toreros jumped out to a 27-7 intermission lead. His first quarter touchdowns came from four and 15 yards, and he added a one-yard scoring push in the second quarter. The 151 yards and three rushing touchdowns are both the most by a PFL running back in 2008.
Cullen, also in his first year with the Toreros, scored seven points in USD's victory. He made four PAT kicks and closed out the game's scoring with a 24-yard field goal. Cullen also booted eight kickoffs a total of 476 yards (59.5 ave.). In week one Sebastian Trujillo was the PFL player of the week after USD's win over Marist, and John Matthews earned it after USD's victory against Azusa Pacific.
The Toreros head to Des Moines, Iowa this week to face the Drake Bulldogs. Game time is 11:00 a.m. (PT) at Drake Stadium. The game will be broadcast on San Diego 1700 AM (Jack Cronin, play-by-play), and can also be heard via the internet at usdtoreros.com.
