USD junior quarterback Mason Mills (Coronado, CA) was named this week's Pioneer Football League offensive player of the week for his performance in the team's 41-9 home win over Dayton. Mills broke a 12-year old PFL record with 511 passing yards to lead the Toreros past the Flyers. It was the first 500-yard passing performance in league history and broke the record previously held by Butler's DeWayne Ewing (497 yards vs. San Diego on Oct. 21, 2000). Mills completed 31-of-41 passes, including four touchdown tosses, to finish the day with a 202.7 pass efficiency rating. He accounted for all but 68 yards of the San Diego offensive output on the night. This is Mason's second PFL player of the week award this season; he also was honored back on September 8th.

Junior wide receiver Sam Hoekstra (Carlsbad, CA) earned national honors from the College Football Performance Awards in Week 9. Hoekstra set a new USD single game record with 246 receiving yards on 11 receptions as he was Mills' favorite target on the night. He caught a 34-yard touchdown pass in the second period and had a long reception of 53 yards in the third period. For the season Hoekstra now has 41 receptions for 617 yards (15.0 average) and 3 touchdowns. The previous Torero single game mark for receiving yards was 234 (Nick Garton vs. Davidson, 2003).

The Toreros (5-3; 4-1 PFL) play at Marist College (3-5; 2-3 PFL) this coming Saturday, November 3rd, in a 1:00 p.m. (Pacific) contest at Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie, New York.
