The USD football program received some good news today when it was announced that three of their student-athletes were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America District 8 Division I football team. All three Toreros will now be eligible for the national team. The trio includes senior captain and safety Robbie Beathard (San Diego, CA; 3.78 GPA, Accountancy), senior defensive end Blake Oliaro (Folsom, CA; 3.50 GPA, Mechanical Engineering), and junior defensive back Troy McClelland (San Diego, CA; 3.85 GPA, Accountancy). Beathard and Oliaro were selected for the third straight year, while McClelland gets his second straight nod.
The twenty-three member team includes players from both the FCS and FBS level, and is represented by student-athletes from California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington and Utah. Student-athletes are nominated by current CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) members. Voting for Academic All-District (First, Second and possible Third Team members are named) is done by current CoSIDA members. Those who obtain First Team All-District status move onto the national Academic All-America ballot; these national awards (First Team, Second Team, Third Team for each sport category) is voted upon by Academic All-America Committee members and current CoSIDA Board of Directors.
The USD Toreros, with a record of 6-3 overall (5-1 PFL), play at Morehead State this Saturday, before returning to close out their regular season slate with Drake on November 16th at 1:00 pm. San Diego is currently in a three-way tie for first in the PFL with Butler and Marist, with Mercer, Dayton and Drake all within one game. The outright winner of the PFL this season earns the league's first ever automatic qualifier into the NCAA FCS Championships.
