Six Toreros selected to PFL All-Academic Teams
Dec. 12, 2012
Six USD football players were among fifty Pioneer Football League student-athletes that have been named to the 20th annual Academic All-PFL teams, as selected by the league's media relations directors. Three of USD's five 1st Team members are repeat selections - senior center Matt Peleti (Laguna Niguel, CA; 3.62 GPA in Finance), junior defensive tackle Blake Oliaro (Folsom, CA; 3.57 GPA in Mechanical Engineering), and junior defensive back Robbie Beathard (San Diego, CA; 3.80 GPA in Accountancy).
Toreros also being selected to the First Team include junior quarterback Mason Mills (Coronado, CA; 3.18 GPA in Biology) and sophomore defensive back Troy McClelland (San Diego, CA; 3.85 GPA in Accountancy). The USD quartet of Beathard, McClelland, Oliaro and Peleti were automatically named to the 1st Team after they were selected to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII team back in November. USD senior linebacker Zach Dunaj (Thousand Oaks, CA; 3.33 GPA in Accountancy) was honored on the PFL All-Academic Second Team.
Pioneer Football League athletic directors established the Academic All-PFL squads in 1993 as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-PFL consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 and reached sophomore standing both athletically and academically at his current institution.
