2014 Football Awards Winners Get Acrobat Reader

(San Diego, Calif.) - At the end-of-the-season USD Football Awards Banquet held today on the campus of USD, senior linebacker Troy McClelland (San Diego, Calif.) and senior wide receiver Brandon White (San Jose, Calif.) shared the team's Most Valuable Player Award for the 2014 season. The Toreros finished 9-3 overall, won the Pioneer Football League championship for the third time in four years, and advanced to the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs for the first time in program history. McClelland, a team captain, directed the Torero defensive efforts and finished with 85 tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and six pass breakups. White hauled in a team-best 57 receptions for 828 yards and nine touchdowns, including the game-winner over Valparaiso on the last play of the game that clinched the PFL title for the Toreros.

Senior linebacker Una Hamala (Inglewood, Calif.) was tabbed the Defensive Most Valuable Player. Hamala collected a team-high 101 tackles on the year and chipped in with one sack, one interception, one fumble recovery and three pass breakups. First-year running back Jonah Hodges (Santa Cruz, Calif.) was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player. He finished the year with 1,214 yards rushing on 221 carries (5.5 ave.) and added six touchdowns. He also led the team in all-purpose yardage with 152.0 yards per game.

Additional awards were handed out to freshman linebacker Max Michaels (Poway, Calif.) - the Dr. James B. Orwig Scholar-Athlete Award; junior kicker David Last (Valley Center, Calif.) - the Kevin Briscoe Special Teams Player of the Year; senior wide receiver D'Angelo Barksdale (Chula Vista, Calif.) - the Dave Adolph "Do You Love Football" Award for Offense; senior safety Matt Miller (Santa Maria, Calif.) - the Dave Adoph "Do You Love Football" Award for Defense; junior offensive tackle Pono Keni (Kailua, HI) - Outstanding Lineman Award for Offense; freshman defensive end Jonathan Petersen (Poway, Calif.) - Outstanding Lineman Award for Defense; junior offensive center Steven Oliver (Chandler, Ariz.) - Most Improved Offensive Player; sophomore defensive tackle Jamal Newman (Oceanside, Calif.) - Most Improved Defensive Player; freshman wide receiver Justin Priest (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) - Most Outstanding 1st Year Player; senior safety Matt Miller (Santa Maria, Calif.) and sophomore running back Jonah Hodges (Santa Cruz, Calif.) - Strength Coach's Award; freshman tight end Nick Monica (Simi Valley, Calif.) - Offensive Scout Player of the Year; and freshman defensive lineman Aaron Laut (Lakewood, Calif.) - Defensive Scout Player of the Year.

Second-year head coach Dale Lindsey, the 2014 PFL Coach of the Year and an Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year candidate, handed out NCAA Participation Medals to the sixty Toreros that suited up for the FCS Playoff game, and also Senior Awards to the twelve outgoing seniors. Additionally, those Toreros that earned All-PFL honors and PFL All-Academic honors were recognized, and the 2014 USD Highlight Film was shown.
