Notable: Was one of 26 golfers listed on the 2011 Ben Hogan Award Watch List... The 2011-12 campaign has been highlighted by his first-place finish at the San Diego Intercollegiate in Chula Vista at historic San Diego Country Club... Finished with a one stroke victory at 2-under at 214 (74-68-72)... Two-time West Coast Conference Golfer of the Year (2012 & 2011)... Won the prestigious 2010 Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic (Nov. 21-23) with a 12-under par 201 (67-67-67), beating out 30 other All-Americans from the 2009-10 season... Competed in the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Washington, advancing to the third round of the Match Play portion of the tournament ... Among the 312 participants in the 2010 U.S. Am, he placed in the top-64 during stroke play to advance to the Match Play format ... Sophomore year named a Division I Ping All-America honorable mention pick by GCAA... First year earned Ping Freshman All-America honors after finishing in a tie for 13th overall at Nationals (214; 70-68-76)... Named 2009 WCC Freshman of the Year... In the summer of 2009, he won the Hawaii Qualifier (134; 66-68) to advance to the US Amateur at Southern Hills where he shot 150 (74-76)... Played in the 2008 Sony Open where he shot back-to-back 72's at the Waialae Country Club (par 70/7,068 yards)... He earned the chance to tee it up with the pros by winning a one-spot qualifier on December 17th, 2007, for the amateurs that played in the Governor's Cup, a Ryder Cup-style competition between Hawaii's best amateurs and club pros.
2011-12 at USD: Lone senior has competed in all 12 tournaments... Owns a team-best scoring average of 70.52 (36 rounds)... Named WCC Player of the Year and a First Team All-WCC member... Runner-up at WCC Championships with 8-under par 208 (72-70-66)... Named WCC Golfer of the Month for March, as well as San Diego Hall of Champions Amateur Star of the Month... 2012 co-Torero Athlete of the Year... Rallied to win medalist honors at the Fresno State Lexus Classic with 69's in final two rounds (-7 under 209)... Impressive 1st place showing at the San Diego Intercollegiate in Chula Vista at the historic San Diego Country Club... Finished with a one stroke victory at 2-under at 214 (74-68-72) while defeating three players from Stanford ranked in the top-10 nationally... In last outing was runner-up at Desert Shootout with 13-under par 203 (64-68-71)... His 64 at Desert Shootout beat his previous season-low round of 66 in second round of Mark Simpson Colorado Invite... 3rd place finish at 206 (71-67-68) at The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, CA... 5th place showing at 213(69-74-70) at Kauai Collegiate Invite... T-7th at 220(75-71-74) at Nevada Wolf Pack Classic.
2010-11 at USD: Named 2011 West Coast Conference Golfer of the Year... Along with winning the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, participated in all five fall tournaments... Also won the shortened Wolf Pack Classic (137; 67-70), and turned in top-10 performances at Kauai (T3rd at 212; 72-70-70), The Prestige (T6th at 214; 69-70-750 and Gene Miranda Falcon Invite (T10 at 216; 73-70-73)... Tallied four rounds of 67 during the fall, as well as a first round 69 at the Prestige.
2009-10 at USD: Named a Division I Ping All-America honorable mention by GCAA... Tied for 2nd at the NCAA Championships (208; 69-66-73)... Besides his 2nd round 66 at Nationals that set a new course record tournament record, he was also the clubhouse leader after 36 holes with a new course tournament record of 135 (previous mark was 136; Tiger Woods in 1996)... Also named to the All-WCC First Team for second straight year... Turned in another impressive season with a team-leading scoring average of 72.23 (38 rounds)... Finished in 8th place at the 2010 WCC Championships... This spring he has turned in four top-5 performances including medalist honors at the Mardi Gras Invitational where he totaled a 9-under score of 207 (64-74-690 on the challenging TPC Louisiana course (par 72; 6,931 yards), which is also the host course for the PGA Tour's Zurich Classic... Ching's 64 matched the course record for tournament play set by two PGA professionals... During the Callaway Match Play Championships in Arizona, Ching was a perfect 4-0 as USD placed 7th in the 16-team event... He was second at the USD Callaway Invitational (70-72-69) and third at the prestigious USC Collegiate Invitational where he finished at 7-under par 206 (74-68-64)... This past fall season he competed in 12 rounds finishing with a scoring average of 73.67... Shot his lowest round of the fall season, a 68, at the Kauai Collegiate Invitational while also finishing in second place in the tournament.
2008-09 at USD: Tied for 13th at Nationals with his 1-over 214 (70-68-76)... Owned team-best 71.75 stroke average heading to Nationals... Tied for 24th at the NCAA West Regionals at 214 (72-69-73)... Tied for 15th at the WCC Championships with 217 total (74-72-71)... Competed in all 40 rounds for the Toreros... Won Bay Area Shootout and also won 2 of 3 match play events at Callaway Match Play Championships... During the Fall campaign he averaged 71.53 for 15 rounds and turned in two top-10 finishes in team's last two tournaments... Tied for 8th at the Sycuan Collegiate with a 7-under 209 (68-71-70), and followed up with a tie for 4th at the Kauai Intercollegiate Invitational at 205 (69-69-67)... USD took home the Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational trophy at the Puakea Golf Course by winning by 15 strokes... Five of his fifteen rounds were sub-70.
High School: Joined the Punahou golf team his senior year after concentrating on tennis as a two-time state doubles champion... In golf, Ching won the 100th Manoa Cup, the most prestigious amateur championship locally; the Hickam Invitational, the Army Amateur and the Oahu Country Club Invitational... That is in addition to winning the ILH and stay boys' titles, and leading his team to the league and state team championships.
Personal: Born on April 1, 1990 in Honolulu, Hawaii... Parents are Steve and Kori Ching of Honolulu... Chose USD for its great weather, good golf team, and excellent education... Also recruited by USF, Pepperdine, and New Mexico... His sister, Alina, is a freshman on the Pepperdine women's golf team... Has a great passion for ocean sports - surfing, body board, kayak and fishing.
