(Tempe, AZ) - The USD men's golf team shot the day's best team score, a 9-under par 275, to move into a tied for 2nd place at the 41st annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational at ASU's Karsten Golf Course (par-71, 7,026) April 5-7 (Friday-Sunday). Eighteen teams are competing and after day two the Toreros find themselves tied for 2nd overall with Oregon State at 564. New Mexico held the team lead but now only have a two stroke advantage heading into Sunday's final round. USD's 275 was five shots better than the next best team score of 280 by Oregon State.
USD was paced by junior Taylor Schmidt with a 4-under par 67 today and was followed by sophomore teammates Grant Forrest and Linus Vaisanen who each carded 68's. Junior Joe Carlson and sophomore Alexis Gemme-Piacente each finished with 1-over par 72's. Mike Bosco, playing as an individual, carded a 75. Heading into tomorrow's final round, Forrest finds himself in fourth place at 136 (68-68). He is followed by Vaisanen (T17 at 142; 74-68), Carlson (T24 at 143; 71-72), Schmidt (T24 at 142; 76-67) and Gemme-Piacente (T51 at 148; 76-72). Oregon State's Nick Chianello is still the clubhouse leader after today's 68. He sits at 10-under par 132 following Friday's 64.
