Ching runner-up after final round 66
April 18, 2012
(Hollister, CA) - The USD men's golf team placed 5th at the 2012 West Coast Conference Men's Golf Championships played the past three days at San Juan Oaks Golf Club (par 72; 6712 yards) in Hollister, California. The Toreros shot a final round team score of 287 and finished with an overall score of 868 (297-284-287). Saint Mary's won the team title with a three-round team total of 844 (-20). USF (853) and BYU (866) rounded out the top three.
"It was a tough week for us," said head coach Cory Scoggin. "We came in here expecting to have a chance to win, that was our goal, but going out on day one with just three guys playing well enough to give us that chance is a little frustrating. But we came back well the second and third rounds and put up some respectable scores. Alex and Grant both played very well this week. Alex did everything he could to win this and was the leader in the clubhouse when he finished up, and Grant went out and proved he's one of the league's best freshmen this season."
Alex Ching, last year's WCC Player of the Year, fired a final round 6-under par 66 to finish at 8-under par 208 (72-70-66). He finished runner-up to Ben Beyer of Saint Mary's, who birdied the 18th to also fashion a 66 to finish one shot better than Ching at 9-under par 207 (69-72-66). USD freshman Grant Forrest, who entered the final round just 1 stroke back of the leader, fired a final round 72 to finish in 4th alone with a 5-under par 211 (70-69-72).
Torero freshman Alexis Gemme-Piacente closed with back-to-back 1-under par 71's to finish at 220 (+4; 78-71-71) and tied for 19th overall. Rounding out USD scoring was Joe Carlson (T34 at 230; 78-74-78) and Leon Knoll (40th at 247; 77-82-88).
