Alex Ching earns PING All-West Region honors
June 2, 2011
STILLWATER, Okla. - The 21st-ranked USD golf team, the No. 19 seed in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, turned in their best team score in today's third and final round of stroke play. Out of the 30 teams competing at the Karsten Golf Club (par 72; 7416 yards), the Toreros tied No. 1 ranked Oklahoma State for the second best team score today at 294 (+6), finishing just one stroke back of Michigan and Duke. Despite their strong finish, it was not enough to advance to Friday's Match Play format with the top eight teams. For the three-day 54-hole stroke play format, USD tied for 16th overall with San Diego State at 898, just 9 strokes back of 8th place Duke who was the last team to advance to the Match Play format. UCLA (872, +8) edged out Georgia Tech by three strokes for top honors. LSU's John Peterson edged out UCLA's Patrick Cantlay for medalist honors by one stroke as he finished 5-under par 211 (74-65-72).
USD senior Kenneth McCready shot the team's best score today with a 1-under par 71. He was followed by Alex Ching (72), Gunner Wiebe (75), Ben Murray (76) and Manav Shah (80). USD 54-hole player totals are as follows - Murray (t-38 at 223; 72-75-76), Shah (t-56 at 225; 71-74-80), McCready (t-81 at 228; 79-78-71), Wiebe (t-94 at 230; 78-77-75), and Ching (t-106 at 232; 80-80-72). Behind four birdies each, both Ching and Wiebe posted their best rounds of the tournament. Murray added three birdies, and McCready two.
This marked the third straight year that the Toreros advanced to Nationals. The Toreros say goodbye to a solid senior class - Gunner Wiebe, Ben Murray, Kenneth McCready, Jason Shano and Scott Brace. Division I PING All-Region honorees were announced by the GCAA at Nationals. A total of 152 players across six regions - Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West - earned all-region honors for 2011. USD junior Alex Ching (Honolulu, HI) was named to the Division I PING All-West Region team.
