First Round Results Get Acrobat Reader

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Paced by third-place showings from Pedro Figueiredo and Pontus Widegren who each shot 3-under 69s on Sunday, the UCLA men's golf team took an early two-shot lead over co-host Stanford after the first round of The PGA WEST.

Thirteen teams are competing in the 54-hole event being contested at the par-72, 7,300-yard TPC Stadium Course. UCLA shot an 8-under team score of 280 during Sunday's round while Stanford, which has co-leader Sihwan Kim, fired a 282.

Vanderbilt is in third at 3-under 285 while co-host UC Davis was the only other team to break par, shooting 1-under 287. Defending champion TCU (289), the University of San Diego (290) and USC (294) round out the top seven places.

Kim shares the lead with defending medalist Johan de Beer of TCU who matched Kim with a 4-under 68. de Beer is playing as individual. Kim highlighted his round with seven birdies, including five on his back nine. de Beer had two pars in his first six holes and then later added an eagle-3 on the par-5 eighth to get to 4-under which he finished his round at.

Figueiredo and Widegreen are among four players tied for third at 3-under, joining Daniel Jennevret of TCU and Ben Murray of San Diego.

The co-host Aggies were led by Tim Honeycutt and Austin Graham who each shot 71s over the first 18 holes and are tied for 10th. Sophomore Tyler Raber had a 72 and is tied for 16th, Andrew Haggen is tied for 22nd after a 73, and senior Brent Booth is tied for 31st after firing a 2-over 74 on the difficult course.

Stanford has two players also tied for 10th with Steve Ziegler and David Chung. The Cardinal's Jordan Cox shot a 72 and is tied for 16th while Andrew Yun carded a 73 to tie for 22nd. Stanford also has four players competing as individuals led by Graham Brockington who is tied for 43rd after his round of 75.

The Prestige at PGA WEST, now in its 10th season, features top academic and golf-playing institutions. The tournament, which has been played at several courses at the world-class resort, is in its first year at the TPC Stadium Course. Five teams participating this year are ranked among the top 40 by Golfstat, including No. 4 Washington, No. 8 Stanford, No. 12 USC, No. 27 TCU and No. 38 Notre Dame.

Teams will continue play with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun round on Monday before concluding the event with 18 holes on Tuesday morning.
