(Simi Valley, Calif.) - The USD Toreros placed second at the 2013 Bill Cullum Invitational, getting edged out by Cal State Fullerton on the final day by one stroke. San Diego came up just short in their attempt of defending the title they won a year ago on the Wood Ranch Golf Club (par 72, 6,819 yards) in Simi Valley. After a strong second round (275) that gave the Toreros a six shot lead heading into the final round, USD wasn't able to keep that momentum going over the final 18 holes.

Cal State Fullerton shot a final round team score of 281 to finish at 849 (-15) while USD closed with a 293 to finish one stroke back at 850 (-14). The Toreros did manage to beat out 24th ranked Arizona State (852) who placed third. Daniel Chian of Long Beach State won medalist honors with his 10-under par total of 206 (72-68-66). USD also beat out their WCC foes - Pepperdine (5th place, 871), Loyola Marymount (12th, 882) and Gonzaga (14th, 886).

San Diego's second place finish in the 20-team tournament was on the strength of two top-10 performances by junior Grant Forrest (4th at 209; 71-68-70) and sophomore Alex Chiarella (t-6th at 211; 69-70-72). Rounding out USD scoring was senior Taylor Schmidt (t-14th at 215; 74-65-76), junior Mathias Dahl (t-19th at 216; 68-73-75) and freshman Sebastian Smith (t-57th at 225; 76-72-77). Freshman Will Twitty, playing as an individual, totaled 237 (71-86-80).

The Toreros return to action November 4-6 as they compete in the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Princeville, Hawaii.
