Alex Ching (Honolulu, HI) is the WCC Player of the Year for the second year in a row and his teammate, Grant Forrest (North Berwick, Scotland), is the WCC Freshman of the Year. Saint Mary's Scott Hardy has been voted the Coach of the Year.
Ching, the 2011 WCC Player of the Year, finished second with a score of 208 (-8) at the 2012 WCC Golf Championships in Hollister, Calif. this week. Ching averaged a 70.52 this season (12 tournaments) and won both the San Diego Intercollegiate and the Fresno State Lexus Classic.
"For Alex to get WCC Player of the Year is a great honor for him especially since this is his senior year," said head coach Cory Scoggin. "He had an amazing year that included 3 wins and 7 top-5s. Overall he has had his best year as a Torero and has played a vital role in leading this young team into the post-season. I am very proud of what he has accomplished this year and throughout his career as a Torero."
Forrest is the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. He tied for fourth with a 211 (-5) at the 2012 WCC Golf Championships. Like Ching, he played in all 12 USD tournaments this season and ranked second on the team with his 72.25 scoring average.
"After I watched Grant play in his first 2 events this year I knew he would have a great chance to win this award," said Scoggin. "Grant had a great fall with three top-10s. His 66 in the final round at Edgewood in Nevada's event where he beat the field by 4 was one of the most impressive rounds I have seen as a coach. He also had a putt to tie for the win at the Falcon Invitational. His spring started off slow but he has really started swinging it well lately and was right in the mix coming down the stretch this week at the WCC's. Grant has a bright future as a Torero and I look forward to watching his game develop over the next few years."
Hardy led Saint Mary's to its first ever WCC Golf Championship this week. The Gaels tallied a team score of 844 (-20) to finish nine strokes ahead of second-place San Francisco.
