Grant Forrest competing well at British Open
July 18, 2013
(Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland) - USD junior golfer Grant Forrest (North Berwick, Scotland) turned in a solid opening round of 73 (+2) in today's British Open being played at historic Muirfield. Playing with 56-year-old Mark O'Meara, and Marcus Fraser, Forrest was 1-over par on each of his nines (37-36). He posted the second best score for amateurs, bested only by Jimmy Mullen (71). With a field of 156 golfers, only 46 golfers posted scores better than Forrest, while eleven others matched his opening round 73.
Forrest carded four birdies, four bogeys and one double-bogey (6th hole). His birdies came on the par-3 4th hole (229 yards), par-5 9th hole (558 yards), par-4 15th hole (447 yards) and par-3 16th hole (188 yards).
The weather conditions were very calm for Scotland with blue skies, light breezes and warm temperatures. Forrest got to watch first hand as O'Meara, who won the 1998 claret jug, post an impressive 66 - he finds himself just one shot back of clubhouse leader Zach Johnson.
Forrest, who grew up just minutes from Muirfield, will be in the same three-some tomorrow with O'Meara and Fraser with a 7:05 a.m. start time.
