USD Golf tees off season at the USF Olympic Invitational
Sept. 7, 2016

Head Coach Cory Scoggin and his 2016-17 golf team will tee off their season next week at the USF Olympic Invitational on September 12-13. The 13-team field will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18 on Tuesday. The two-day event will be played at historic The Olympic Club (par 71; 6,934 yards) in San Francisco, California.

This year’s team will be led by the lone senior, Nick Baines. Baines played in the starting lineup in
all but three events last season and his best finish came at The Farms Collegiate Invitational where he opened with a 68 that led to a tie-15 finish. He is coming off a solid summer highlighted by his 4th place finish in the Oregon Open, 7th in the Oregon Am and 6th in the Portland City.

USD’s trio of juniors, Daniel Lopez, Zack Wagner and Regan Kilpatrick, will also provide some veteran leadership this season. Lopez had the 2nd lowest scoring average of 73.8 last year but only played in five events. A wrist injury kept him out of competition for the majority of the spring. He is now healthy and poised to make a major impact this season. He finished 10th in the Long Beach City over the summer. Kilpatrick played in every event last spring and counted 13/18 of his rounds for the team score. He continued to show improvement over the summer with a 3rd place finish in the California Am Qualifier and narrowly missed the US Am by 1 shot. Wagner joined the team last spring as a transfer from Palomar Community College. He also qualified for the California Am over the summer and is poised to make an impact this season.

Sophomores George Gardner, Alvaro Escalada, Nathan Zhao and Kavan Canekeratne now have a year of collegiate competition under their belt and are expected to have a breakout season. Gardner led this group in their freshman campaign playing in seven events highlighted by his 15th place finish at Oregon State’s event. Gardner had a solid summer with 9 of his 12 rounds at 72 or better and a 3rd place finish at the Tillman Trophy. After not cracking the lineup in his freshman year, Zhao showed marked improvement over the summer with his 7th place finish in the San Diego City Am. Escalada made the lineup three times his freshman year and his best finish of 21st came at The Farms. He finished 13th at the Madrid Am and 9th at the Campeonato Castilla la Mancha over the summer. Canekeratne played in three events as an individual during his freshman season and has been preparing all summer to make an impact in the lineup this fall.

An exciting trio of freshmen join the team for the 2016-17 campaign. David Ricciardelli from Scottsdale, Arizona; Camilo Mexsen from Mexico, and Dalton Hankamer from Temple, Texas all have held a top 100 national junior ranking during their junior careers. This trio is expected to have a major impact in the starting lineup this season and be in the hunt for WCC Freshman of the Year. Ricciardelli led his high school team to a state title and finished runner-up individually his senior year. This past summer was highlighted by a 14th place finish at the Southwestern Amateur. Hankamer holds his high school scoring record of -9 for 36 holes and was a 4-time All-District and All-Region award winner for the state of Texas. Mexsen was a member of Mexico’s Junior National team, and had a Golfweek scoring average of 72.34 last year. He holds the IMG Junior Tour 36 hole scoring record of -11.
