(San Diego, CA) - Second-year Torero head coach Tim Mickelson announced Monday that Jake Yount (Danville, CA/De La Salle HS) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf at the University of San Diego for the 2005-06 season. Yount recently played in the 2004 US Junior Amateur held at the Bay Area's historic Olympic Club, finishing 17th in the stroke play event. He has won numerous times on the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT), the most recent being in Illinois, shooting scores of 67 and 64 to win by 14 shots. Yount also has posted a pair of top-ten finishes in 2004 American Junior Golf Associations (AJGA) events.

"He's got the power game and the finesse game," commented Mickelson after the signing of Yount. "He's got a ton of talent and is the type of player we need to continue to get better and build towards a National Championship. Jake is a very welcomed addition to the roster."

Yount is the first official commitment during the early signing period for Mickelson and a San Diego team that posted a team scoring average of 292 this fall, a 15-stroke improvement from this time last year. Individually, USD has shot 16 sub-par rounds thus far in 2004-05, compared to just 10 all of last year.
