(San Diego, CA) - USD head men's golf coach Cory Scoggin is pleased to announce that Alex Chiarella (Maui, HI) and Skyler Finell (Carmel, CA) have both signed a national letter of intent and will join the Torero program for the 2012-13 school year. Additionally, Taylor Schmidt, a sophomore at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, will be transferring in for the 2012 spring season.

"I am very excited about Alex and Skyler joining us next year," said first year head coach Cory Scoggin. "They are both very talented and have been very successful at the junior level. Their skills and work ethic will have an immediate positive impact on our team next fall!"

Chiarella comes to USD as Hawaii's number one junior player. Some of his many accomplishments include: being a three-time Hawaii State Junior Golf Association King Auto State Championship winner (2011, 2010, 2009); named the 2010 HSJGA Player of the Year; placed 10th at the 2010 Aloha PGA Hawaii State Open; and is a 3-time Junior America's Cup, Hawaii member (2009-2011; he tied for 11th in 2010).

Finnell comes to USD as the California's 14th ranked junior golfer for the 2012 class. Skyler has vast tournament experience including being the first player in the history of the Future Champions Tour to score lower than 130 for a two day event.

Schmidt, an incoming sophomore, comes to USD from Concordia University of Oregon, an NAIA school in Portland Oregon. Taylor played number one for Concordia and will contribute immediately to the Toreros success.

Added Scoggin, "Taylor is a quality player that will give us much needed depth and strengthen our lineup this spring."

The Toreros will begin their spring schedule on February 13-14 at the 2012 San Diego Intercollegiate that will take place at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, California.
