SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Thomas Olsen made four saves and San Diego's defense played well but it was not enough to take down No. 10 Notre Dame as the Toreros fell, 2-0, Friday evening in its season opener.
The Toreros (0-1) were on the defensive early as the Irish (1-0) pressed forward early and often. USD defended well but fell victim to a hand ball in the box in the 41st minute. Notre Dame's, Felicien Dumas converted the ensuing penalty kick to give the Irish a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros found their offensive rhythm in the second half and spent more time in the final third. However, USD had trouble finding openings inside the penalty box and could not generate a chance on frame.
USD's best offensive opportunity came in the 82nd minute when Leon Mueller-Wiesen hammered a half-volley from 25 yards out about a foot over the top left corner of the goal.
The near miss would prove costly as the Irish doubled its lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later. Dumas lofted a high cross with pace into the box from the left side of the field. The pass found the head of Jeff Farina who was sprinting into the box. Farina headed the ball with pace into the back of the net to extend Notre Dame's lead.
Olsen and his defense, consisting primarily of Josiah Benjamin, Patric Krall, Henry Lander and Aidan Marmion, played well throughout the match and did well to limit Notre Dame's opportunities in the center of the field.
Three of Olsen's four saves came on hard shots that required a quality stop. He was particularly impressive in the air, limiting the amount of crosses Notre Dame had opportunities to connect on.
The Toreros will look to bounce back Sunday at 9 a.m. (PT) when it takes on No. 7 Indiana. Live statistics will be available via USDToreros.com.
