SACRAMENTO - Two first half goals propelled San Diego to a convincing 2-0 victory Friday evening at Sacramento State.
It is the second consecutive win for the Toreros (2-2) which dominated the pace of play and possession for a majority of the game.
USD's defense continued its strong start to the year, earning its second consecutive shutout. The Toreros have held opponents to three goals in 369:19 minutes this season.
Thomas Olsen made both saves he was tasked with to earn his second straight clean-sheet.
USD settled in nicely early in the first half and consistently created dangerous chances in the final third. The Toreros were rewarded in the 33rd minute when Berry broke through the backline to get USD on the scoreboard.
Allen Luhrs slipped a pass behind his defender near the top of the 18-yard box to Berry who took a touch and buried a right-footed shot into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
It was Berry's second goal of the season and second goal in as many games.
The Toreros doubled its lead in the 39th minute on a rocket of a shot by Freddy Polzer. Reuben Dass created the opportunity with some fancy footwork on the left sideline to create space from his defender. Dass sent in a cross to the center of the field that rolled toward Polzer who hit a blistering shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.
It was the first goal of Polzer's collegiate career and the first collegiate point for Dass.
USD held a 7-5 advantage in shots in the second half but was unable to extend its lead.
Sacramento State pushed forward late in the second half and started creating more dangerous opportunities in the offensive zone. However, the Toreros defense was up to the task and did well to limit any chances in the center of the field and in the penalty box.
USD will look to carry its momentum into Sunday's 2 p.m. (PT) match at UC Davis.
