SAN DIEGO -- Henry Lander scored what seemed to be a game-winning goal late in the second half but San Diego was unable to hold on for the victory against Lipscomb, falling 3-2 in double-overtime on Friday night.
Lander sent a glancing header on a corner kick to the back of the net in the 79th minute to break a 1-1 tie. However, the Bisons (4-2) Ivan Sakou responded less than five minutes later with an equalizing goal to send the game to overtime.
Sakou struck for a second time in the second overtime period, looping a header over the head of Toreros (3-3) goalkeeper, Thomas Olsen, for the deciding goal.
It was a tough defeat for USD, which entered the match on a three-game winning streak and played well enough to win throughout the contest.
Olsen was strong in goal, making four saves and snaring crosses away from attackers in the box. His defense played well in front of him, keeping pace with a quick Lipscomb attack that like to play through the midfield with speed.
It was a physical match with six yellow cards issued and one red card. The Toreros will be without starting defender, Josiah Benjamin, after he was sent off with a red card in the first overtime period after being given his second yellow card of the game.
The game was feistiest toward the end of the first half after a series of physical plays in Lipscomb's penalty box. The increasingly tenuous half peaked when Reuben Dass was taken down in the box on a counterattack and the referee signaled for a penalty kick.
The teams exchanged words before the penalty kick and after Gustav Brandt converted the kick in the 43rd minute. Three yellow cards were issued during the exchange.
USD utilized a balanced attack with eight different players registering at least one shot.
The Toreros will look to get back on track Sunday when they travel to Fullerton at 5 p.m. (PT).
