SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of No. 8 UC Santa Barbara on Friday night from Harder Stadium. The Toreros (3-4-0) had a difficult time containing the UC Santa Barbara (5-1-1) offense as the Gauchos' Luis Silva recorded a hat trick on the night.

Silva put the Gauchos on the board early when he and Dom Sarle connected for the first score in the 10th minute of action. Sarle slipped a pass into Silva in the box as Silva navigated around the defense by hopping over a Torero defender and finding the left corner of the net with a low shot past USD keeper Adam Campbell.

The Toreros struggled to get offensive momentum going as James Cohn recorded the only USD shot inside the first 34 minutes. In the meantime, a bit of déjà vu struck the Toreros as Silva put UC Santa Barbara up 2-0 in the 28th minute when he took another pass from Sarle inside the box and scored from virtually the same spot as his first goal.

Stephen Posa got the only other Torero shot off during the half in the 35th minute but USD ended the half facing a two goal deficit. The USD offense picked up in the second half as the Toreros tallied five shots in the period, one short of the Gauchos' six. Unfortunately, the Toreros couldn't stop Silva from finding the back of the net again when he handled a pass from David Opoku that Opoku flipped with his heel around the USD defense allowing Silva to connect on the cross-goal shot to the lower right side of the net that gave the Gauchos their ultimate 3-0 lead.

The night's crowd of 13,772 was the fifth-highest attendance in NCAA regular season history and the second-highest NCAA attendance total for a regular season match played at a campus site.

UC Santa Barbara held a 14-7 overall advantage in shots on the night, led by Silva's six shots and three goals and Sam Garza's five shots. Posa led the Toreros with three shots in the contest.

Gaucho keeper Andre Grandt, who had four saves in the match, improved to 5-1-1 with his fourth shutout of the year, while Campbell, who had two saves, dropped to 3-3-0 with the loss.

USD moves on to open up West Coast Conference play next week when they host Loyola Marymount at Torero Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 28th for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
