SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego posted a 3-0 shutout against the Huskies of Houston Baptist Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium. Sergio Lopez, Charles Blase, and Patrick Wallen all scored in the first half for USD.
"We had a lot of people that needed to step up today because of injury to some of our starters," said head coach Seamus McFadden. "However it was an ugly win for us today."
San Diego improves to 3-3-1 overall on the season with the win over the Huskies. It is their second win in a row as they head into conference play coming up this weekend.
Sergio Lopez scored his first collegiate goal for USD in the 11th minute of the match. San Diego was battling early in the first half to punch in a shot and take a quick lead. Charles Blase had a good look at the net which was deflected by Huskie goalkeeper Chris Dodd and gathered up by Lopez who had a quick one touch and fired off a shot from four yards out to take a 1-0 lead.
Blase had his scoring opportunity in the 34th minute and jumped on it. Patrick Wallen sprinted with the ball across centerfield when he saw Blase ahead of him. Wallen sent the ball up before he was called for offsides giving Blase a chance to shoot from 20 yards out past diving Houston Baptist keeper for the 2-0 lead.
In the 43rd minute, Wallen took his turn to score for USD. San Diego again had a chance to score with numerous players in the box when Conor McFadden took a shot which was blocked sending the ball into the air towards Wallen who headed the rebound into the bottom right corner for the 3-0 lead.
USD outshot the Huskies 11-2 and had the corner kick advantage 5-1. Both teams were even at 13 fouls each. USD had four shots on goal connecting on three of them.
San Diego opens up conference this coming weekend on the road against the Gael's of Saint Mary's on Friday, October 1 at 2:00 p.m. followed by their match with the San Francisco Don's at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 3.
