PORTLAND, Ore. - San Diego junior midfielder Ryan Guy scored the game-winner in the 66th minute as the No. 24 ranked Toreros topped Portland, 2-1, on a damp Friday night on Merlo Field in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams. The loss drops the Pilots to 2-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the WCC.

Guy put USD (5-0-2, 1-0-0 WCC) up for good when he ripped a shot into the top-right corner of the net just out of the reach of junior Pilot keeper Luis Robles. The shot from 23 yards out was unassisted. It's Guy's first goal of the season.

The Pilots were out shot by the Toreros 15-6 overall and 8-3 in shots on goal. San Diego also had seven corner kicks to Portland's two.

Neither team was able to crack the goaline during the first half that saw a consistent downpour for 45 minutes. Portland sophomore Matthew Dallman had two good opportunities when he fired two shots at USD junior goalie Lance Friesz. Both came from outside the box and both were saved by Friesz, the second a frozen rope that Friesz was able to knock down.

A break in the weather allowed both offenses to get on track in the second half. San Diego was first on the board as junior midfielder Eric Pohl punched one in at 47:36. The goal was set up when senior defender Calle Rendahl found unmarked junior forward Michael Caso in the middle of the box who one-touched it to Prohl. Robles was shaken up on the play but remained in the game.

The Pilots had the answer just minutes later when Alex Elliott scored his team-leading third goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the 51st minute. Elliott was set up by a nice cross from the right side by fellow freshman Brayton Knapp, who was led down the flank by freshman Bryan Irwin. Elliott was able to beat Friesz down low from seven yards out. It was the first assist this season for both Knapp and Irwin.

Robles ended up with five saves for the Pilots, while San Diego's Friesz collected two.

Next up for the Toreros is Gonzaga this Sunday in Spokane.
