SAN DIEGO – Leon Mueller-Wiesen and Jimmy Ryan scored their first goals of the year to lead San Diego to a 2-0 victory against Loyola Marymount on Sunday evening at Torero Stadium.

It is the Toreros (6-3-1, 1-0 WCC) third straight victory and third consecutive shutout. It’s also the third straight season USD has opened conference play with a win against the Lions (2-8-2, 0-1 WCC).

Both Toreros goals were stunners with the first being delivered by Mueller-Wiesen on a free kick in the 41st minute. With the ball placed directly in the center of the field at the top of the penalty box, Mueller-Wiesen curled a perfectly-placed right-footed shot to the top left corner of the goal.

It was Mueller-Wiesen’s first goal as a Torero.

Ryan provided the fireworks in the second half, redirecting a hard cross by Patric Krall from 15 yards out with a right-footed full volley to the top left corner of the goal. It was Ryan’s first collegiate goal. The quality finish doubled the Toreros lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute.

Jimmy Ryan scored the first goal of his collegiate career.

That was all USD would need as the defense continued to shut down LMU’s attack for the final 15 minutes to secure the win.

The Toreros backline of Henry Lander, Josiah Benjamin, Aidan Marmion and Aaron Frey played excellent and helped the team extend its shutout streak to 366:20 minutes – a streak spanning four games and dating back to a goal in the 14th minute at Fullerton on Sept. 17.

Thomas Olsen made one save in each half and did well to come off his line to snare high balls away from Lions attackers.

Miguel Berry had a quality game up top and was dangerous throughout the match, generating a team-high four shots.

The Toreros had seven players register two or more shots during the game to outshoot LMU, 17-10.

USD will look to continue its momentum when it continues its four-game homestand next weekend against Portland (Oct. 13, 7 p.m. PT) and Gonzaga (Oct. 15, 1 p.m.).
