PORTLAND, Ore. - The USD men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss at Portland on Friday evening from Merlo Field. The Toreros (3-5-2, 0-2-1 WCC) got a goal from Julian Ringhof in the 81st minute, but the Pilots had already built up a 2-0 lead by that point in a physical contest that featured a total of seven cautions- four yellow cards for USD and two yellows and a red card for Portland.
Portland (7-4-0, 2-1-0 WCC) scored both of their goals in the first half. Aaron Caprio put the Pilots up in the 18th minute when he connected from inside 10 yards off a rebound in the box. Then, in the 21st minute, Eddie Sanchez scored what would be the game-winner on a penalty kick to put Portland up 2-0.
The Pilots controlled the first half with a 9-2 shot advantage in the period, but USD rallied back in the second half, outshooting Portland 6-3. Merlin Hoeckendorff delivered a long pass to Ringhof on a free kick that Ringhof used to find the back of the net from eight yards out for USD's score on the night.
Connor Brandt led the Toreros with three shots in the contest. Michael D'Arrigo (3-4-2) recorded four saves before being relieved by Drew Ilijevski in the second half. Ilijevski tallied a save while playing all 45 minutes of the second period. Meanwhile, Justin Baarts (3-4-0) picked up the victory for Portland in goal after recording a pair of saves.
The Toreros continue their WCC road swing when they play at Gonzaga at 1 pm on Sunday.
