SAN DIEGO – Djordje Babic scored his first goal of the year and Thomas Olsen made six saves in net to help lead San Diego to a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Portland on Friday night at Torero Stadium.

Facing a 1-0 deficit after an early Pilots (6-5-1, 1-0-1 WCC) goal, Babic provided a perfect finish to the top corner of the goal on a well-laid pass by Miguel Berry in the 64th minute to level the score, 1-1. It was Babic’s first goal of the season and Berry’s team-leading third assist of the year.

Djordje Babic scored a late equalizer - his first goal of the season.

Olsen delivered when the Toreros (6-3-2, 1-0-1 WCC) needed him most. He made six saves – one shy of his career high – including multiple highlight-worthy stops late in the contest.

The draw extended USD’s unbeaten streak to five games.

Olsen made what seemed would be the save of the game in the 79th minute when Portland’s, Erik Edwardson, was left alone in the center of the penalty box and tried placing a shot to the top right corner. Olsen took a quick step to his left, dove and was able to get his fingertips to the ball to knock it just wide of the post.

Olsen outdid himself less than four minutes later when Portland came streaking into the final third on a counterattack and connected a trio of passes through the San Diego defense. The ball finally fell to a wide open Edwardson who hit a low shot on frame from 16 yards out. Olsen reacted quickly and was able to smother the shot to keep it out of the goal and preserve the 1-1 tie.

Thomas Olsen made multiple crucial saves late to help USD earn a draw.

It was a chippy game with the teams combining for 37 fouls, seven yellow cards and a red card. The Pilots, Jason Romero, was sent off in the 77th minute with a red card after head-butting the Toreros Gustav Brandt.

Despite the man advantage for the final 13-and-a-half minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, USD was unable to break through Portland’s backline to generate a game-winning goal.

The Toreros defense played well, limiting Portland’s offense to one goal. The Pilots entered the match averaging 2.36 goals per game. Portland’s goal at 16:46 snapped USD’s shutout streak at 383:06 minutes – a streak that spanned five games.

The Toreros will look to continue its momentum Sunday at 1 p.m. (PT) when it takes on Gonzaga.
