LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego Toreros nearly knocked off the WCC leading Loyola Marymount Wednesday afternoon at Sullivan Field as the Toreros took the Lions into overtime thanks to an equalizer goal by freshman Sergio Lopez.

After falling behind 1-0 in the 35th minute by a David Ponce goal, Sergio Lopez would punch in the tying goal within five minutes of LMU's goal. Lopez was quick to take advantage of Cory Norris's rebound off the far post, with a touch from close range tying the match at 1-1.

The Toreros were the last team to beat the Lions at Sullivan Field during the regular season, having come away with a 4-1 victory on October 25, 2009.

Both teams would pick up the pace in the second half looking for the game winner, with San Diego taking the final shot in the 89th minute by Sergio Carranza which sailed just over the cross bar as time expired in regulation.

LMU got their game winner within the first three minutes of the overtime period when Ponce would score his second goal of the match.

San Diego falls to 5-6-1 and 2-3-0 in the WCC. They are 0-4-1 in overtime matches this season. LMU improves to 9-3-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the WCC. San Diego returns home and will travel to face Santa Clara on Sunday, October 17 for a 2:00 p.m. match at Buck Shaw Stadium against the Broncos.
