SAN DIEGO – San Diego ensured Sunday’s Seamus McFadden Night ended in victory by delivering a dominating performance in a 3-1 win against UCLA at Torero Stadium.

The Toreros (8-3-2) first celebrated its 39-year head coach during pregame and halftime ceremonies, then honored him with an impressive winning performance in front of a packed stadium of 2,539 fans.

“I’m just a coach,” said McFadden. “I’ve tried to be a good role model and mold kids by giving them an opportunity. That’s how I’ve lived my life.”

The victory extends USD’s unbeaten streak to seven games.

Aaron Frey scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 44th minute, gathering a loose ball off a corner kick and smashing a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the goal.

Aaron Frey scored the first goal of his collegiate career to give the Toreros a first-half lead.

Djordje Babic added the game-winner in the 50th minute, powering a shot from the center of the field eight yards out into the lower right corner of the goal. Freddy Polzer contributed a solid individual effort to force an own goal by UCLA in the 59th minute.

“We got a timely goal at the end of the first half,” said McFadden. “They had a stretch there where they were very good and on top of us. We’ve been scoring timely goals and defending really well as a group. I was pleased for the boys.”

Djordje Babic scored the game-winning goal in the 50th minute.

USD’s defense – consisting of Patric Krall, Henry Lander, Frey and Aidan Marmion – played excellent and its only blemish was a fortunate Bruins (6-6-1) rebound in the 89th minute. The group shut down UCLA’s attack a majority of the game and did well to keep their strikers out wide and away from goal.

Thomas Olsen made three saves in goal and was active off his line to alleviate threats from crosses and high balls.

”We’re hard to break down. We’re not giving goals away and that’s been key for us,” said McFadden.

Miguel Berry was electric up top for the Toreros and assisted the game-winning goal. It was his team-leading fourth assist of the season. Berry has registered at least one point in six of the past seven games.

The victory against the Bruins concludes a 4-0 homestand for USD, which will travel to Pacific and Saint Mary’s next weekend.
