STOCKTON, Calif. – Two Pacific goals in the first seven minutes was too much for San Diego to overcome as the Toreros dropped a 3-1 decision Friday at Knoles Field.
USD (8-4-2, 2-1-1 WCC) dug itself in an early hole after surrendering goals on the first two shots of the game in the third and seventh minutes of the game. It was the third time this season the Toreros had given up a goal on the first shot of the game.
The loss snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak for USD.
Freddy Polzer did his best to limit the damage, scoring his third goal of the season in the 11th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1. Patrick McGrath provided the assist – his third helper of the season. Polzer had an excellent game and was a key generator of the Toreros offense.
USD had its chances, generating 10 shots including four on frame. However, the Toreros had trouble finding the finishing touch to cut into the Tigers (10-3, 2-1 WCC) lead.
Pacific added a third goal in the 43rd minute to extend its lead.
Nearing the end of the first half, McGrath had USD’s best opportunity to reduce the deficit but his header ringed off the post and was cleared from danger.
The Toreros reeled off five shots in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Toreros will look to get back on track Sunday at 1 p.m. (PT) when it takes on Saint Mary’s.
