After a tough first half that included two goals by the Gaels (5-6-4, 2-2-1 WCC), the freshman duo delivered clutch goals to get the Toreros (8-4-3, 2-0-2 WCC) back in the match. USD is unbeaten in eight of the past nine matches.
Frey struck in the 57th minute, converting on one of USD’s nine corner kicks in the match. It was his second goal of the season.
Dass picked a good time to score the first goal of his collegiate career, netting the equalizer in the 67th minute. He received a through ball from Miguel Berry, outpaced the defense and hammered a perfectly placed shot past the Gaels goalkeeper.
Thomas Olsen was excellent during a busy day in goal. He made a career-high eight saves on 22 Saint Mary’s shots. He came off his line well throughout the match to snatch crosses and high-balls out of the air to reduce Gaels scoring chances.
It was a well-played match that went back-and-forth at a blistering pace. At the conclusion of the contest, players from both teams collapsed on the field as they tried to catch their breath.
The teams traded their best scoring opportunity of the overtime period less than a minute apart in the 107th minute.
Saint Mary’s attacked in transition and outnumbered the Toreros in the penalty box. Olsen left his net to challenge a Gaels striker all alone to the side of the goal. The Gaels striker slipped a pass to his teammate near the penalty spot who hit a hard shot on frame.
A Toreros defender who had rushed back to the goal line was able to get his foot on the shot and clear it off the goal line.
It was an outstanding defensive play that preserved the tie and ignited the Toreros best chance of the extra period. The cleared shot eventually ended up on the foot of Benjamin who got behind the Saint Mary’s defense and nearly got a shot past the Gaels goalkeeper.
His shot was deflected high in the air and toward the goal but the spin of the deflection caused it to go just wide of the frame when it bounced.
The Toreros will look to get back in the win column Friday at 7 p.m. (PT) when it plays host to San Francisco in its final regular season home game.
