SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's soccer team lost to the visiting Portland Pilots 2-1 on Sunday afternoon from Torero Stadium. In the final home match of the season, the Toreros took an early lead on a goal from Dan Delgado but were unable to hold off the Pilots on a sloppy, muddy pitch.
It wasn't a pretty environment for soccer but both teams slogged through the mud and rain for 90 minutes. The Toreros struck first when Delgado converted a USD penalty kick in the 21st minute to put USD (8-8-1, 5-4-1 WCC) up 1-0. It was Delgado's second score of the season as well as second goal in as many matches.
Portland (9-6-2, 4-4-1 WCC) answered in the 33rd minute when Connor Barbaree took a pass from Brenden McAleese and dribbled up the right side. From there he fired a rocket from around 20 yards out that found the far corner of the net past USD keeper Michael D'Arrigo and evened the score at 1-1.
The Toreros closed out the first half holding the edge in shots at 9-7. The second half only featured one shot for each team but Portland took advantage of their lone opportunity. Ben Hemphill took a cross from McAleese in the box and knocked in a sliding shot from around six yards out that bounced off the far post and in for the 47th-minute game-winner.
Overall, the Toreros held a 10-8 advantage in shots on the day and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Four different Toreros had two shots, while Steven Evans led the Pilots with two shots of his own.
Portland's Justin Baarts (9-6-2) recorded six saves while earning the win. D'Arrigo (1-2-0) took his second loss of the year but tallied four saves in the effort.
With the loss, the season series is evened up after USD defeated Portland on the road 1-0 earlier this year.
The Toreros hit the road on Wednesday, Nov. 9th for a 2:00 pm match at Loyola Marymount.
