SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Michael Turner scored the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute to give the USD men's soccer team (6-9-3, 3-4-0) a 3-2 win over Santa Clara on senior night. Turner, who had an assist earlier in the match, had a penalty kick blocked just a minute earlier, but redeemed himself with his sixth goal of the season.
"It's awesome," Turner said after the match. "The perfect way to go out. It's been a fun ride, and it couldn't have finished any better."
The Broncos were the first to score, taking the lead in the 34th minute. Parker Holland headed the ball from 15 yards out over the Torero backline, finding Carlos Delgadillo, who headed it past Thomas Olsen. The Toreros immediately responded on a nice give-and-go. Djordje Babic sent it out wide to Ryan Camara and then made a run towards the box. Camara found Babic at the top of the box, who finished for his fourth goal of the year.
The Broncos retook the lead in the 54th minute following a free kick from 25 yards out. Ryan Masch sent a rocket that Thomas Olsen deflected, but the ball went right to Miles Robinson on the left wing who placed the ball inside the near post.
The Toreros scored the equalizer in the 65th minute set up by some nice passing. Merlin Baus found Michael Turner near the top of the box, who sent a beautiful through ball to Miguel Berry, who beat the defense and took a touch around the keeper to score his team-high eighth goal of the season. Berry has scored four goals in the past two matches.
The Toreros were fouled in the box in the second minute of the first extra time period, setting up a penalty kick for Turner. He went for the lower left corner, but Santa Clara's Dakota Havlick made a brilliant diving save to extend the match.
"My emotions were low and then high," Turner explained. "I couldn't believe I missed the kick, but luckily got my shot at redemption on a nice through ball."
It was less than a minute later that Turner scored the game-winner. He was set up by fellow senior Jared Hegardt; both players graduated from San Diego's Cathedral Catholic.
Thomas Olsen earned the win, collecting two saves. The Toreros has 12 shots to Santa Clar'a nine, and had two more corners than the Broncos (6-4).
