SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team has announced their 2014 schedule. The Toreros will play 19 total matches and will face five 2013 NCAA Tournament participants; Bradley, New Mexico, UC Irvine, UCLA, and LMU (twice).
After a home scrimmage against San Diego State (Aug. 21), the Toreros will kick off their 2014 season with home matches against Buffalo (Aug. 29) and Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 1). USD will then travel north for matches at Sacramento State (Sept. 5) and UC Davis (Sept. 7).
The Toreros will then host a pair of 2013 NCAA Tournament participants on September 12 (Bradley) and September 14 (New Mexico). Bradley went 14-7-2 last season and was knocked out in the second round. New Mexico went 14-6-2 and made it all the way to the Final Four before losing to eventual national champion Notre Dame.
USD hits the road the following weekend where they will play at UC Riverside on September 18 and at UC Irvine on September 21. Irvine went 15-5-3 last season and made it to the Sweet 16 where they lost to Maryland, who finished second in the nation.
The Toreros will return home for an exciting match with UCLA on September 26, who entered last year’s NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed. USD will then play three “non-counter matches” against WCC schools; San Francisco (Oct. 3), at Santa Clara (Oct. 5), and 2013 WCC champion LMU (Oct. 10).
The Toreros will kick off WCC play October 17 when they host Saint Mary’s. On October 19, Pacific will come to Torero Stadium for a 2:00 p.m. match. This is the first season the Tigers have fielded a men’s soccer team since 1985.
USD will head to the Pacific Northwest the following weekend for matches at Gonzaga (Oct. 31) and Portland (Nov. 2). The final home game will be against Santa Clara on November 7 at 7:00 p.m, and the Toreros will close out the regular season with matches at San Francisco (Nov. 9) and LMU (Nov. 15).
