SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team had an eventful kickoff to the 2012 season as they embarked on an eight-day trip to Europe that saw them taking in the sights and tuning up their play on the field with a six-match exhibition slate. The team spent four days in Ireland and had the pleasure of visiting the homeland of head coach Seamus McFadden and assistant coach Brian Quinn. They followed that with a four-day stay in England, where assistant coach Mike Nicholson hails from, and were able to watch Brazil play Belarus at the historic Old Trafford in Manchester, among other activities.
On the field, the Toreros posted a 4-1-1 record playing against two League of Ireland clubs and the Egerton Select men's league team. USD played doubleheaders with a "Blue" and "White" team playing simultaneously. In their first action, both USD squads posted wins over Waterford United in Waterford, Ireland as the blue and white each notched 4-0 wins.
Two days later the Toreros split their two matches against University College Dublin with the blue team losing 3-2 and the white claiming a 2-1 victory. Then, the final day of competition saw the white squad win 5-0 over Egerton in Manchester, England, while the blue tied 2-2. Aside from their matches, the Toreros spent time training and practicing on the foreign soil.
While soccer was what brought them to Europe, the team was able to take in a number of memorable experiences along the way. Among their stops in Ireland, the team visited the school that McFadden attended as a youngster and Quinn's childhood home in Belfast, while also having the opportunity to stay in Dublin. They even got to experience the famed Irish countryside with a postgame hike at Glendalough. In England, the team had the opportunity to stay in the iconic Mottram Hall outside of Manchester, the same hotel that the German national team stayed at during Euro 2012. There was also a visit to the Chester Cathedral. While in England, the team was also able to attend a match between Brazil and Morocco and visit Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC.
"It was just a tremendous bonding experience," said McFadden after the trip. "It was a great way to start the season and really brought the team together. Hopefully this positive experience will give us some momentum heading into the season. This was an amazing opportunity that we couldn't have done without the generosity of Joe Caso and his unwavering support and loyalty to the USD men's soccer program. Also, we appreciate Darrin and Lisa Campbell helping us make this happen. It means so much to the program to have had this kind of opportunity."
The Toreros open the 2012 season with a scrimmage at UC Riverside on August 16th, followed by their first official contest at home versus UC Irvine on August 24th at 7:30 pm.
