Torero Tidbits....
• Sr. MF Dan Delgado returns after being named 2011 WCC Player of the Year. Delgado was the third consecutive Torero to earn conference P.O.Y honors (Patrick Wallen, 2010; Ryan Peterman, 2009)
• USD returns seven starters from last year's squad that finished 9-9-1 overall
• Head coach Seamus McFadden is the WCC's winningest coach in conference matches with a 111-74-18 (.591) career record in WCC contests
• USD returns four All-WCC selections from 2011- MF Dan Delgado (1st Team/Player of the Year), MF Elijah Galbraith-Knapp (1st Team), MF Conor McFadden (Hon. Men.), D Thomas Fiskerstrand (All-Freshman Team)
• USD and UC Irvine met in last year's season opener with UCI earning a 1-0 victory in Irvine.
• USD was picked to win the WCC in this year's preseason coaches poll. The Toreros garnered four first-place votes.

Top Returning Scorers: Enrique Cardenas (15 pts.; 6g/3a in 2011), Christopher Santana (13 pts.; 4g/5a in 2011), Lester Hayes III (9 pts.; 4g/1a in 2011)

In Goal: UC Irvine looks to replace the graduated Andrew Fontein, who was selected in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft.

Notables: This is the second straight year UCI and USD have opened the season against each other (Then-No. 17 UCI won 1-0 in Irvine on 8/26/11)... The Anteaters outscored their opponents in 2011 by a margin of 45-24... UCI finished the 2011 season ranked No. 13 by the NSCAA.

OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT: The Toreros are 2-2-1 in their last five season openers. Overall, USD is 18-9-5 in season openers under Head Coach Seamus McFadden. This will be their first season opener at Torero Stadium since the 2009 season when they opened at home with a 2-0 win over Cal State Northridge.

THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM: MF Dan Delgado became the third consecutive Torero to win WCC Player of the Year honors after taking home the recognition last season. He followed current teammate Patrick Wallen (2010) and Ryan Peterman (2009). Delgado tallied a total of nine points in 2011 (2g/5a) while ranking second in the WCC in assists during WCC play (5). He has led the team in assists the past two seasons.

LEAVING HIS MARK: Sr. F Patrick Wallen enters the 2012 campaign tied for seventh in USD history in career goals scored (22). Wallen had a career-high 12 goals in 2010 and scored three goals in 2011. USD's all-time leader in goals scored is Guillermo Jara, who scored 51 goals from 1992-95.

BREAKING IN: Despite missing time in 2011 due to injury, RS-Jr. GK Michael D'Arrigo is in the top-10 in three categories in the USD record book: 8th in career saves (57), 8th in both career games started in goal and games played in goal (21/23) and 9th in career shutouts (6).

LOOKING FOR AN OPENING: The 2012 Toreros are a team deep with experience as they return a total of 20 letterwinners from a year ago, including seven starters. Overall, USD returns 12 players who played in at least half of the team's 19 games in 2011. Trying to break in will be a crop of five true freshmen and four transfers, all of whom already have NCAA soccer experience under their belts. RS-Jr. D Julian Ringhof was an all-conference and all-region selection at Cal State Los Angeles, while So. MF Connor Brandt tallied four goals last season at Cal State Dominguez Hills. So. MF Sigurd Pryser played in 17 games with 13 starts last season at Div. III North Park University and So. F Keegan Smith played in 16 games at Cal Poly SLO in 2011.

ON THE SLATE: The 2012 schedule features three teams ranked in the preseason NSCAA Top-25: No. 11 UC Santa Barbara (9/14), No. 13 UC Irvine (8/24) and No. 18 Saint Mary's (9/30 & 11/9). The upcoming slate also features a matchup with Ohio State (9/7), whom the Toreros have never faced.
