SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After winning the 2009 USD Nike Soccer Classic, the Toreros are looking ahead to their Friday night match against their Southern California rival No. 8 UCLA. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Torero Stadium on September 25.
The Toreros are coming off of a 1-1 weekend with a 2-0 win over No. 21 Michigan State, and a 2-1 loss to No. 15 Dartmouth. San Diego now 4-2-0 in the non-conference season with one match remaining before West Coast Conference action begins. USD received ten votes this week in the Soccer Times weekly poll, however they did not inter the Top-30. Freshman forward Patrick Wallen currently leads the team with three goals and one assist for seven points. He has nine shots on goal and one game-winning-goal.
The No. 8 UCLA Bruins travel to San Diego coming off a 2-1 victory over the Cal-State Fullerton Titans last week. The Bruins are currently 3-1-0 overall with a perfect 2-0-0 record at home and a 1-1-0 record on the road (2-0 Win at Maryland, 2-0 loss at Georgetown). UCLA is riding a two-match win streak defeating UC Davis 4-0 and Cal State Fullerton 2-1. Currently leading the team is Chandler Hoffman with two goals and one assist for five points and three shots on goal.
The Toreros and Bruins will face off for the 27th time. USD is 5-18-4 all time against UCLA coming off a 1-1 tie last season. San Diego is 1-3-1 against the Bruins in the last five years with a 4-2 upset in 2005 when UCLA was ranked No. 6 in the country.
