SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros (3-3-1) will be featured on two WCC Games of the Week when they play host to Loyola Marmount on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7 pm and Santa Clara on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 pm. The Loyola Marymount Lions (4-2-1) are coming off a 1-0 loss at UC Santa Barbara this past Sunday. Juan De Rada leads the Lions offensively with three goals on the year and one assist. John McFarlin paces the conference in assists (6) so far, and has a goal for a total of eight points. Paul Blanchette has seen the majority of the time in goal, posting a 2-2-0 record with a pair of shutouts to go along with a 0.44 goals against average and 16 saves. As a team, LMU is second in the WCC in points (26), goals (11), assists (14), and shots (102). USD leads the all-time series 28-11-3 and has won the past five meetings.
The Santa Clara Broncos (3-5-0) suffered a 1-0 overtime loss at No. 1 Cal on Sept. 27. Prior to that they won three straight after opening the season with four consecutive losses. Six different Broncos have scored one goal this season, while James Huffer has added two assists and a goal for a team-best four points. Kendall McIntosh has played every minute in goal for SCU, with two shutouts, 30 saves, and a 1.21 goals against average. The Broncos lead the all-time series 30-11-3 and have won the past three contests.
LAST TIME OUT...
USD earned a 1-0 home win over UC Davis on Sept. 20, followed by a 2-1 home victory over Sacramento State two days later. Against the Aggies, Michael Turner scored the game-winner off an assist from Connor Brandt in the 50th minute. UC Davis outshot USD 16-8 in the game and held an 11-3 edge in corner kicks, but USD keeper Michael D'Arrigo anchored a stout defense with seven saves on the night. Versus Sacramento State, Elijah Galbraith-Knapp put USD up with a goal in the 19th minute, followed later by the game-winner from Torrey DeArmas in the 73rd minute. Both Galbraith-Knapp and DeArmas registered a goals and and an assist in the win.
USD and Sacramento State combined for 30 shots on Sept. 22, marking a season-high for USD this season.
Seven freshmen have seen time for the Toreros so far this season. Various injuries have pressed many of USD's newcomers into action in the early going.
So far, nine different Toreros have scored one goal this season.
USD was without five starters in their 3-2 loss at UCLA on Sept. 15, which allowed Rom Appel and Dannny McDermott to earn their first-career starts, while Shane Thompson, Alex Stimpfl, Lundon Attisha, and Niccolo Piacentini each saw their first action of the fall.
USD finished the 2012 season with a 14-9-0 (9-3-0 WCC) record and won their first WCC title since 2009 before advancing to the Elilte 8 of the NCAA Tournament, their best NCAA finish since playing in the national title game in 1992. The Toreros finished the 2012 season ranked No. 12 in the final NSCAA Top-25.
USD returns four All-WCC performers from last season: Sr. M Elijah Galbraith-Knapp (2nd Team), Sr. D Julian Ringhof (2nd Team), Jr. GK Drew Ilijevski (honorable mention), and Torrey DeArmas (All-Freshman).
The Toreros led the WCC in goals (22) last season during conference play, ranked 2nd in points (59) and tied for 3rd in assists (15).
