SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros (3-4-2, 0-1-1) will hit the road for their first WCC road contests this weekend as they travel to Portland for a 7 pm matchup on Friday, Oct. 11, before heading to Gonzaga for a 1 pm showdown with the Zags on Sunday, Oct. 13. The Portland Pilots (6-4-0, 1-1-0) split their first two WCC contests this past weekend, winning at San Francisco 3-2 on Oct. 4 and falling at Saint Mary's 3-2 on Oct. 6. As a team, the Pilots lead the WCC in points (61), goals (21), shots (143), and assists (19). Portland ranks 17th in the NCAA in goals and 20th in points-per-game (6.10).They are outscoring opponents 21-14 on the year and have outshot opponents 143-114 so far. Eddie Sanchez leads the conference with seven goals this season (12th in NCAA) and 17 points (13th in NCAA), while Jaime Velasco has added four goals and an assist and Aaron Caprio has dished out four assists. Jason Dodson (4-0-0, 3 Sho, 0.61 GAA) and Justin Baarts (2-4-0, 1 Sho, 2.11 GAA) have split time in goal for the Pilots.

USD leads the all-time series with Portland 18-16-5. The Toreros defeated Portland 4-3 at home last year, but lost on the road 2-1.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs (5-2-2, 0-0-2) got off to a strong start this season but tied their first two WCC games this past weekend (1-1 at Saint Mary's & 0-0 at USF). Earlier in the year, the Zags topped then-No. 15 UC Santa Barbara and then-No. 21 Wisconsin, both on the road. Clark Phillips leads the team with three goals on the year, while Lars Ludwigs has added a pair of goals and an assist, and Nick Hamer has three assists. Ryan Caballero has five shutouts in goal this season to go along with 41 saves and a 0.42 goals against average, which tops the WCC. Defense is the name of the game for the Zags, as they have outscored opponents 10-4 on the year and outshot opponents 134-107.

The Toreros own a commanding 23-6-1 advantage in the all-time series with Gonzaga, including wins in their past three meetings.

USD tied LMU 2-2 in their WCC opener this past Wednesday at Torero Stadium and then lost 1-0 in overtime to Santa Clara at home on Friday. Torrey DeArmas (2') and Michael Turner (51') each notched goals for the Toreros against LMU. USD had a 2-0 lead over the Lions until the 75th minute when Adrien Perez and David Flores scored to force overtime and eventually the tie. Against Santa Clara, the Broncos' Carlos Montes scored in the 91st minute to seal the victory. SCU outshot USD 13-10 in a game that was tight from the beginning.

• USD and Sacramento State combined for 30 shots on Sept. 22, marking a season-high for USD this season.
• Seven freshmen have seen time for the Toreros so far this season. Various injuries have pressed many of USD's newcomers into action in the early going.
• USD was without five starters in their 3-2 loss at UCLA on Sept. 15, which allowed Rom Appel and Dannny McDermott to earn their first-career starts, while Shane Thompson, Alex Stimpfl, Lundon Attisha, and Niccolo Piacentini each saw their first action of the fall.
