The Dons hold a slight edge in goals this season with a 12-11 advantage over their opponents... USF is second in shots (55) in WCC play.
WEEK'S TOP PERFORMER: RS-So. Sergio Lopez won his first career WCC Player of the Week honor on Oct. 8 after notching goals in each of USD's victories. He scored his first goal of the season in a 4-3 home win over Portland on Oct. 5 before adding a game-winner in a 2-0 victory over Gonzaga on Oct. 7. Lopez was the second Torero to earn WCC player of the week recognition after Ellijah Galbraith-Knapp won the honor on Sept. 10.
LOGJAM: After the first two weeks of WCC play, the Toreros are in a three-way tie with Santa Clara and Portland for first place. All three teams carry 3-1 WCC records into the week. USD has already lost at Santa Clara and defeated Portland at home. Behind USD, San Francisco, Saint Mary's and Loyola Marymount are each with two points of each other.
STEPPING ON THE GAS: The Toreros have scored nine goals in their past three games, surpassing their scoring toal in their first eight games combined. In their 4-3 win over Portland this past Friday, USD established a season high in goals (4) and points (12) and tied their season high with 19 shots in the contest.
CARPE DIEM: F Sergio Lopez and F Torrey DeArmas have quickly made the most out of their brief time in the starting lineup. Lopez has started the last three games after opening the season on the bench and has scored goals in his past two contests. Meanwhile, DeArmas joined the starting lineup at the beginning of WCC play and notched a goal and an assist in this past Friday's win over Portland.
JUST COMING UP SHORT: While the scores haven't seemed to do the games justice, USD has been very competitive with the two Top-25 opponents they have faced so far this season. In both games the Toreros have held their opponents in check defensively by not allowing a goal in the first half in either matchup. Against No. 13 UCI (8/24), the Toreros held a 7-6 first half advantage in shots, while against No. 6 UCSB (9/14), USD got a number of outstanding first half saves from GK Michael D'Arrigo. With the exception of a nine minute span where the Gauchos scored three goals, the Toreros were right in the mix.
THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM: MF Dan Delgado became the third consecutive Torero to win WCC Player of the Year honors after taking home the recognition last season. He followed current teammate Patrick Wallen (2010) and Ryan Peterman (2009). Delgado tallied a total of nine points in 2011 (2g/5a) while ranking second in the WCC in assists during WCC play (5). He has led the team in assists the past two seasons.
LEAVING HIS MARK: Sr. F Patrick Wallen enters the 2012 campaign tied for seventh in USD history in career goals scored (22). Wallen had a career-high 12 goals in 2010 and scored three goals in 2011. USD's all-time leader in goals scored is Guillermo Jara, who scored 51 goals from 1992-95.
BREAKING IN: Despite missing time in 2011 due to injury, RS-Jr. GK Michael D'Arrigo entered the 2012 season in the top-10 in three categories in the USD record book: 8th in career saves (57), 8th in both career games started in goal and games played in goal (21/23) and 9th in career shutouts (6).
