Toreros Show Poise, Rally for 2-1 Win over Saint Mary's
After a sluggish first half, the Toreros (5-4-3, 2-0-0) rallied to score two second half goals to beat Saint Mary's 2-1 in front of a raucous crowd at Torero Stadium Friday evening. The Toreros are now 2-0-0 in conference play and 9-0-2 in their last 11 WCC home matches. This is the second straight conference match where the Toreros overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to win 2-1. The outshot the Gaels 12-9, with a 10-3 advantage in the second half.

• The Toreros honored 39-year head coach, Seamus McFadden, this past Sunday with a 3-1 victory against UCLA.

Aaron Frey and Djordje Babic scored a goal apiece, and Freddy Polzer created an opportunity that resulted in a Bruins own-goal to secure the win.

USD’s defense – consisting of Patric Krall, Henry Lander, Frey and Aidan Marmion – played excellent and its only blemish was a fortunate Bruins (6-6-1) rebound in the 89th minute.

USD is 2-1 all-time against the Tigers but dropped last year’s match, 1-0. The Toreros won the first two meetings by a combined score of 5-1.

The Toreros are 30-10-6 all-time against Saint Mary’s and have won the past three meetings. The teams traded own goals in last year’s meeting and Djordje Babic provided the deciding strike to lead USD to victory.

Head coach Seamus McFadden returns for his 39th and final season at the helm. McFadden will continue to help with the team in future seasons but associate head coach, Brian Quinn, will take the lead at the end of the year.

McFadden holds a career record of 385-282-69. Entering the 2017 season, McFadden had 377 career wins, which ranked eighth among active NCAA D-I coaches and 22nd overall for career wins all-time.

San Diego was named a United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award Winner earlier this season. The Toreros earned a team GPA of 3.14 during the 2016-17 academic year. It is the second time the team has been recognized after earning honors in 2014.

Miguel Berry leads the team with 14 points. He leads the team in goals (5) and assists (4). He returns for his sophomore season after leading the team with eight goals as a freshman last year. Berry leads WCC players in game-winning goals (3), is third in points (14) and is fourth in points per game (1.08).

Djordje Babic returned from an early-season injury to establish his role in the lineup and provide a boost to the Toreros attack. He is second on the team in points (7), goals (2) and assists (3).

Freddy Polzer has established himself as one of the team’s best creators, regularly setting up teammates in the final third. He has logged two goals and three assists to tie Babic with seven points.

Thomas Olsen is having an excellent final season. He has played every minute for the Toreros and holds a 0.80 goals-against average and .814 save percentage.

Olsen leads the WCC in goals-against average (0.80), save percentage (.814), shutouts (5) and is second in saves (48).

Olsen made a career-high seven saves at UC Davis (Sept. 10) to help San Diego preserve a 2-1 victory.

• USD leads the WCC in fewest goals allowed (11), goals-against average (0.80), shutouts (5), is second in fewest fouls (140) and third in saves (49).

• The Toreros rank in the top 50 nationally in save percentage (16th, .817), team goals-against average (23rd, .800) and won-lost-tied percentage (30th, .692).

Thomas Olsen ranks in the top 50 nationally in save percentage (22nd, .814), goals-against average (26th, .800) and shutouts (44th, 5), while Miguel Berry ranks 28th in the country with three game-winning goals.

Miguel Berry was named the WCC Player of the Week for his standout play in games against Portland (Oct. 13) and Gonzaga (Oct. 15). He assisted the equalizing goal against the Pilots and scored the game-winner in overtime against the Bulldogs.

Thomas Olsen was named the WCC Player of the Week after helping lead the Toreros to a 2-0 record at Sacramento State and UC Davis (Sept. 8-10). He earned his second shutout of the season at Sacramento State and registered a career-high seven saves at UC Davis to preserve a 2-1 victory.

Goalkeeper Thomas Olsen, striker Miguel Berry, and defenders Henry Lander and Josiah Benjamin were named to the Copa de Causeway All-Tournament Team for their standout play during the games at Sacramento State and UC Davis (Sept. 8-10).

USD boasts a quality mix of experienced returners and a talented freshman class. The Toreros return 14 letterwinners, eight starters and nine freshmen.

USD has won three of the past five WCC Championships and nine all-time in program history.
