Sr. F Patrick Wallen was named West Coast Conference Player of the Month for the month of October. He scored five goals in USD's six wins during the month and added an assist.
The Toreros could clinch their first WCC title since 2009 with a win over Saint Mary's on Friday and a Santa Clara loss to Loyola Marymount. Heading into the weekend, USD holds a two-point lead over the Broncos in the WCC standings.
Wallen moved into a tie for fourth place among USD's all-time goal scorers when he scored his 28th career goal in USD's 2-1 win over San Francisco on Oct. 26. Wallen is tied with Leighton O'Brien (1995-98). Wallen also took over seventh place all-time in USD history in career points- he now has 66 points in his career.
The Toreros won eight games in a row from Sept. 30-Nov. 2, their longest winning streak since an 11-gamer in 2003.
RS-So. GK Drew Ilijevski won his first eight starts in goal this season after taking over as the starter at Saint Mary's on Sept. 30. His first loss came at Portland this past Sunday.
RS-So. F Sergio Lopez was named WCC Player of the Week on Oct. 8. He became the second Torero to earn the honor this season after Elijah Galbraith-Knapp won on Sept. 10.
Sr. MF Dan Delgado scored two goals in USD's 3-2 win at Saint Mary's on Sept. 30. He became the first Torero to score multiple goals in a game since Patrick Wallen scored twice in a 3-2 victory over SMC on Nov. 14, 2010.
Saint Mary's Gaels (9-3-5, 5-2-3 WCC)
Top Scorers: Nathan Arambula (3G/5A/11 Pts.), Trevor Newquist (5G/10 Pts.), Tariq Adam (3G/4A/10 Pts.)
In Goal: Andre Rawls (17 GP/13 GA/0.74 GAA/56 SV/9-3-4/8.0 SHO)
Notables: Saint Mary's is coming off consecutive ties to Santa Clara and San Francisco this past weekend... Prior to that, the Gaels reeled off four wins in a row... They are outscoring opponents 23-14 this season... SMC has allowed the fewest goals in the WCC this year and leads the conference with eight shutouts.
Santa Clara Broncos (10-6-1, 7-2-1 WCC)
Top Scorers: Erik Hurtado (14G/5A/33 Pts.), Ryan Masch (5G/2A/12 Pts.), Carlos Montes (3G/3A/9 Pts.)
In Goal: Larry Jackson (16 GP/14 GA/0.84 GAA/57 SV/10-5-1/6.0 SHO)
Notables: Santa Clara is coming off a 1-0 win at USF this past Friday... The Broncos are outscoring opponents 25-19 this season... Erik Hurtado leads the WCC in points (33) and shots (75) and is tied for the lead in goals (14)... GK Larry Jackson is second in the WCC in goals against average (0.84) and shutouts (6.0).
NAIL IN THE COFFIN: The Toreros have a chance to clinch their first WCC championship since 2009 with a win on Friday over Saint Mary's and a Santa Clara loss at LMU. The Toreros hold a slight two-point edge for first place over Santa Clara heading into the weekend. If things aren't decided by Friday, they certainly will be when USD hosts Santa Clara for the regular season finale on Sunday.
SENIOR SEND OFF: Sunday's regular season finale vs. Santa Clara will serve as senior day for the Toreros' nine seniors.
HISTORY REPEATED?: The last time USD got off to a 7-1-0 start in WCC play was in 2009, the last time the Toreros won a WCC title and the last time they made an NCAA Tournament appearance. That year USD finished the season with a 12-6-2 overall record and 8-2-2 WCC mark and lost to No. 5 UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
OCTOBER'S BEST: Sr. F Patrick Wallen was named WCC Player of the Month for the month of October. His five goals during the month helped USD go 6-0-0 in October. Wallen scored in three straight games at one point and notched two game winners.
STEPPING ON THE GAS: The Toreros have outscored their opponents 18-11 in WCC play. That is a stark contrast to their non-conference slate in which USD was outscored 14-6. USD's 18 goals in WCC play are tied for second in the conference. In their 4-3 win over Portland on Oct. 5, USD established a season high in goals (4) and points (12) and tied their season high with 19 shots in the contest.
LEAVING HIS MARK: Sr. F Patrick Wallen entered the 2012 campaign tied for seventh in USD history in career goals scored and moved into a tie for fourth all-time with his 28th career goal on Oct. 26. Wallen had a career-high 12 goals in 2010 and scored three goals in 2011. USD's all-time leader in goals scored is Guillermo Jara, who scored 51 goals from 1992-95.
CARPE DIEM: GK Drew Ilijevski, F Sergio Lopez and F Torrey DeArmas have quickly made the most out of their brief time in the starting lineup. Ilijevski took over as the starter in goal on Sept. 30 and proceeded to collect wins in his first eight starts, including 31 saves and three shutouts. Lopez has started the last nine games after opening the season on the bench and was named WCC Player of the Week on Oct. 8. Meanwhile, DeArmas, a freshman, joined the starting lineup at the beginning of WCC play and notched a goal and an assist in USD's win over Portland on Oct. 5.
JUST COMING UP SHORT: While the scores didn't seem to do the games justice, USD has been very competitive with the two Top-25 opponents they have faced so far this season. In both games the Toreros have held their opponents in check defensively by not allowing a goal in the first half in either matchup. Against No. 13 UC Irvine (8/24), the Toreros held a 7-6 first half advantage in shots, while against No. 6 UCSB (9/14), USD got a number of outstanding first half saves from GK Michael D'Arrigo. With the exception of a nine minute span where the Gauchos scored three goals, the Toreros were right in the mix.
THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM: MF Dan Delgado became the third consecutive Torero to win WCC Player of the Year honors after taking home the recognition last season. He followed current teammate Patrick Wallen (2010) and Ryan Peterman (2009). Delgado tallied a total of nine points in 2011 (2g/5a) while ranking second in the WCC in assists during WCC play (5). He has led the team in assists the past two seasons.
