Six Toreros Earn WCC Honors
Nov. 14, 2017

SAN DIEGO – Aaron Frey was named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year as six San Diego players earned conference honors, as announced Tuesday by the WCC.

Frey is the sixth WCC Freshman of the Year in program history and the first since teammate Thomas Olsen in 2014.

Miguel Berry was named to the All-WCC first team, while Henry Lander and Olsen claimed second-team recognition. Djordje Babic, Freddy Polzer and Frey were named honorable mentions. Frey was also named to the WCC All-Freshman team.

Frey returned from an early-season injury to play in 15 games and make 13 starts at defender. He was one of the Toreros most reliable backs, guiding USD to five shutouts and a 1.00 goals-against average. He scored the first goal of his collegiate career in a 3-1 victory against UCLA on Oct. 22.

Berry was named to the All-WCC first team for the first time in his collegiate career after earning honorable mention honors as a freshman last season. He established himself as one of the WCC’s most dangerous strikers and led the Toreros in points (15), goals (5), assists (5) and game-winning goals (3).

Lander anchored USD’s backline and helped limit opponents to 18 goals in 17 matches. Among his numerous standout plays throughout the season, his most impressive highlight occurred when he preserved a 1-0 victory for the Toreros against UC Santa Barbara, heading away a shot on the goal line with four seconds remaining in regulation.

Olsen graduates as one of the most accomplished goalkeepers in Toreros history, ranking second in games played (71) and games started in goal (70), third in saves (203), fourth in wins (33), fifth in shutouts (18), and sixth in goals-against average (1.19). He had an outstanding senior season, registering career bests in save percentage (.778) and saves (63), while holding a 1.00 goals-against average.

Polzer and Babic solidified the midfield for the Toreros and were two of USD’s best creators offensively. Polzer was second on the team in points (10), goals (3) and assists (4), while Babic followed with seven points, two goals and three assists to rank third on the team in each category. It is the second all-conference honor for Babic and the first for Polzer.
