DURHAM, N.C. – The University of San Diego Men’s Tennis team (4-0) advanced to the ITA National Indoor Championships on Sunday after defeating No. 23 Duke (1-2) 4-2 in the final round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Championships will take place on February 12-15 in Charlottesville, Va.

In the top spot, doubles pair, No. 7 Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek earned a 6-4 win over Nicolas Alvarez and Vincent Lin. Duke claimed the first doubles victory when TJ Pura and Catalin Mateas topped Jaan Kononov and Romain Kalaydjian 6-2. Joshua Page and Uros Petronijevic secured the doubles point when they bested Josh Levine and Adrian Chamdani 7-5 in the two-spot.

The two teams battled in singles play with Duke taking the first match 6-3, 6-2 with Mateas beating No. 82 Kalaydjian. The Blue Devils added their second point and secured a 2-1 lead when Chamdani earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 58 Kononov in the five-spot.

The Toreros fought back after No. 35 Petronijevic secured USD’s first singles point with a 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 12 Alvarez. Vittek also earned a straight-sets victory, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), against Lin. With the Toreros leading 3-1 Page secured the clinching point when he won his match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Duke’s Levine.

No. 34 Angus was the only Torero to not complete his singles match, he trailed Duke’s No. 102 Pura 6-3, 2-6, 3-4 in a tightly contested match.

It was the Toreros third victory over a ranked team this season. They will face their fourth ranked opponent in their next match on Friday February 5, when they visit Los Angeles to face No. 12 UCLA.
