PALO ALTO, Calif. -The No. 27 University of San Diego men's tennis team kicked off the 2013 season with a thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 29 Texas Tech Friday afternoon at the ITA Kickoff at Stanford University.

The match was knotted at 3-3 and came down to the final set of the singles No. 4 match between Texas Tech's Francisco Zambon and the newest Torero, Uros Petronijevic. Petronijevic (Smederevo, Serbia) handled the pressure like a veteran and won the third set 6-2 to seal the victory for the Toreros.

The Toreros started out the afternoon by winning the doubles point. Senior Thibaut Visy and junior Clarke Spinosa set the tone early, winning at the No. 2 spot 8-4. After the freshman duo of Petronijevic and Romain Kalaydjian fell 8-5 at the No. 1 spot, it came down to Ciaran Fitzgerald and Victor Pugliesein the No. 3 spot.

The sophomores were able to hold off Tech's Gabriel Wanderley and Francisco Zambon 8-7 to earn the crucial doubles point for the Toreros.

In single action, the Red Raiders were able to snag the first two matches. At the No. 1 Vitor Manzini defeated Kalaydjian 6-2, 6-2, and Wanderley beat Pugliese 6-4, 6-0.

Visy and Spinosa responded by winning their respective singles matches to bring the score to 3-2. Visy beat Gabriel Dias 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2, and Spinosa beat Hugo Dojas 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 3.

After Raphael Pfister squeaked past Fitzgerald 7-6, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot, it came down to Petronijevic, who has been in the U.S. for less than a month.



With the win, the Toreros move on to face No. 26 Texas A&M, who defeated the host school, No. 10 Stanford. The match will get underway at 2:00 p.m. and the winner will qualify for the National Indoor Championships. To watch the action live via webcam feed click here.
