Andrew Carlisle won both his doubles and singles match on Saturday
Feb. 2, 2013
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's tennis team (3-1) defeated UC San Diego 7-0 and UC Irvine 6-1 in their first home matches of the year Saturday.
The Toreros, who are ranked No. 26 by the ITA, had strong performances from every member of the roster. USD started out the day by taking the doubles point from UC San Diego after Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy won 8-2 at the No. 1 spot and Andrew Carlisle and Uros Petronijevic won 8-0 at the No. 3 spot. Carlisle was making his first appearance of the spring season.
The Toreros were able to cruise in singles play. Petronijevic was the first finisher, knocking off the Tritons' Max Jiganti 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. He was followed by Victor Pugliese, who won 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot, and No. 62 Romain Kalaydjian who won 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1.
Carlisle followed a strong doubles performance to defeat Kona Luu 6-2, 7-6 (3) at the No. 5.
To round out the singles matches Ciaran Fitzgerald beat Ganesh Alagappan 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 and freshman Jakob Karnopp, who was playing in his first match of the spring season, rallied to win 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6) at the No. 6.
"I'm always happy with a 7-0 win especially against a tough program like UCSD. They are always a tough out and compete so well," Masi said. "Also getting to see Jakob out there and coming back from a set down to close out the match is great to see. Winning all the matches gave us some confidence heading into the second match against UC Irvine."
After sweeping the Tritons, the Toreros stumbled out of the gate against UC Irvine and lost the doubles point.
The Anteaters Jon Poon and Tyler Pham knocked off Fitzgerald and Petronijevic 8-5 at the No. 3, which was followed by a narrow 8-7 (1) win for Ryan Cheung and Jacob Jung over Spinosa and Visy at the No. 1. Lastly, Shuhei Shibahara and Jon Hammel beat Kalaydjian and Pugliese 8-6.
"I was not too happy about the doubles. We didn't come out and play well. Credit to UCI, they took it to us. We need to keep working hard on our doubles if we are going to compete with the top teams," Masi said afterwards.
The Toreros bounced back in a big way after dropping the doubles point to win five sets in the first 30 minutes of singles play. The Toreros would go on to win all six singles matches.
Pugliese's match finished first when he defeated Shibahara 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4. Petronijevic followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 3.
Spinosa, who was just named to the WCC preseason All-Conference team, cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jung at the No. 3. Fitzgerald followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Justin Agbayani.
The Toreros top two spots wrapped up singles play with Visy winning 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 2 and with Kalaydjian earning a 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory at the No. 1.
"I was very pleased and impressed in how we turned it around in singles. We stayed with it and kept playing hard and won all six singles matches. That was good to see us continue to play with that intensity in the second match of the day and really close the door on them," Masi said. "We need matches and this team will keep getting better after each match we play."
The Toreros will hope to continue their winning ways when they travel north on Tuesday to take on the No. 3 UCLA Bruins at 2:00 p.m.
