Toreros Fall to Trojans 6-1

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 36 University of San Diego men's tennis team (6-3) fell to No. 2 (13-2) USC 6-1 Thursday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center to give the Toreros their first home loss of the 2013 season. The Toreros lone point came from Victor Pugliese who defeated No. 51 Eric Johnson 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

The Trojans, who have won the last four NCAA National Championships, got on the board first after sweeping doubles. USC's Eric Johnson and Max de Vroome knocked off Andrew Carlisle and Ciaran Fitzgerald 8-1 at the No. 3, which was followed by Emilio Gomez and Roberto Quiroz earning a 8-2 victory at the No. 2 over Romain Kalaydjian and Victor Pugliese. The final doubles match was abandoned.

The Toreros struggled against the Trojans, who have all six singles players ranked by the ITA. The Trojans got their first win at the No. 6 where No. 119 Jonny Wang beat Andrew Carlisle 6-0, 6-1 and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 for No. 14 Ray Sarmiento over Romain Kalaydjian 6-3, 6-3.

The Trojans would take the next three singles matches as well: No. 4 Emilio Gomez beat Thibaut Visy 6-3, 6-2, No. 88 Max de Vroome defeated Ciaran Fitzgerald 6-2, 7-5, and No. 27 Roberto Quiroz outlasted No. 88 Clarke Spinosa 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (10-7).

 

 

Victor Pugliese continued his hot streak in singles, knocking off No. 51 Eric Johnson 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) to give the Toreros their lone point. Pugliese has now won six of his last seven singles matches.

The Toreros will have next week off to prepare for WCC play. Their next match is at BYU March 9 at 11:30 a.m.
