PROVO, Utah - The No. 47 University of San Diego men's tennis team (6-4, 0-1) opened up WCC play with a 4-3 road loss to No. 39 BYU (12-4, 2-0).

The Toreros, who were playing their first road match in over a month, lost the doubles point but rallied to win three singles matches but fell just short to the Cougars.

After Ciaran Fitzgerald and Andrew Carlisle fell 8-4 at the No. 3 in doubles, Romain Kalaydjian and Uros Petronijevic snagged an 8-5 victory at the No. 2 over BYU's Scott Bohne and Spencer Smith. However the Toreros would lose the last doubles match after Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy fell to BYU's 50th ranked duo of Patrick Kawka and Francis Sargeant.

The Cougars were able to take the first singles match after the 47th ranked Patrick Kawka beat Thibaut Visy 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1. Visy was making his first appearance at the No. 1 in 2013. The Toreros followed that with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win by Romain Kalaydjian at the No. 2.

The Cougars would earn the next two points after No. 82 Clarke Spinosa fell 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 3 to Francis Sargeant, which was followed by a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory for Keaton Cullimore over No. 112 Uros Petronijevic.

The Toreros closed out the day by winning at the No. 5 and 6. Ciaran Fitzgerald defeated John Pearce 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 6 and Victor Pugliese followed that up by extending his singles win streak to five with a 6-7, 7-5, 10-4 victory over Andrey Goryachkov at the No. 5.



The Toreros return to action next week when they host a pair of WCC opponents. They face Gonzaga on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and then Portland at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
