SAN DIEGO – Alex Araouzos made sure his final home match as a Torero was a special one as he led No. 44 San Diego to a dominating, 4-0, victory against No. 50 Loyola Marymount on Sunday afternoon.

Araouzos and doubles partner, David Norfeldt, clinched the doubles point for USD (12-8, 6-1 WCC) with a 6-3 victory at No. 3. Araouzos then made quick work of the Lions’ (15-5, 5-2 WCC) Diego Nava in singles play at No. 6, 6-1, 6-2.

Araouzos extended his winning streak in singles play to seven matches and improved to 21-2 against WCC opponents during his collegiate career.

“What an amazing day for senior captain Alex “Moose” Araouzos,” said head coach Ryan Keckley. “In front of 250 people, Moose not only clinched the doubles to secure the point for us but was also honored for his incredible years in San Diego. He went on to put the third point on the board for us in great fashion.”

The win was the Toreros’ sixth in the past seven matches and USD improved to 24-0 all-time against LMU.

“With our alumni back for a weekend in San Diego, the boys put on a great show with incredible energy and focus,” said Keckley. “We seized the momentum early and never took our foot of the gas pedal. I thought we competed very well in all nine positions. We are playing great tennis deep in the season when it counts.”

USD won doubles matches at the first and third positions to take an early 1-0 lead. LMU won the first doubles match at No. 2, but the the Toreros responded quickly when August Holmgren and Joel Gamerov defeated Gabriel Diaz-Freire and Nick Borchenko, 6-3.

Araouzos and Norfeldt were tied, 3-3, with Diego Nava and Errol Smith but rallied to win the next three games and win the match, 6-3.

Gamerov continued to dominate the No. 3 position and defeated his opponent, 6-2, 6-1, to double the Toreros lead to, 2-0. It was his second consecutive win and he improved to 10-4 when playing at the third position this season.

Araouzos followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-2, victory against Nava and put USD up, 3-0.

Holmgren earned his first WCC singles victory to earn the clinching point, defeating Diaz-Freire at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 7-5.

The Toreros will look to keep its momentum going next weekend when it concludes the regular season with a pair of matches at Pacific and Saint Mary’s.
